The Moore Pen

Cryptos

Recommended Posts

Okay, so this is the last of the pens to arrive courtesy of my mini buying frenzy.

Who would be the best person to approach for a restore job on this? I have no idea if the insides are perished or not (neither did the seller) but the pen body is in fabulous shape with just a little brassing of the tail ring. Oh, and the nib feels a little flexy!

Suggestions?

Cryptos,

I like Danny Fudge for most straightforward repairs. He is in the states, but his prices are very reasonable. I like all of the moderators here as well. They all do outstanding work (Ron Zorn, Gerry Berg, Tim Girdler). The deciding factor for me is usually the turn-around time. Danny is usually much quicker (Thewritepen.net).

If there are specialized problems like large cracks or big chips, I'd definitely go to Ron Zorn or Todd Eberspacher (FarmBoy). For nib retipping, Greg Minuskin, etc.

Hope this helps. :)

I agree about Danny Fudge (based on my own very limited experience of one pen!) but you may find, like me, that it is worthwhile learning how to do straightforward repairs such as replacing sacs yourself.

Postage costs are the problem here in NZ. For a pen such as the Moore, sending it away to have it fixed will probably cost about as much as you paid for the pen in the first place, without a commensurate increase in value. Even a local (NZ) repairer could run to $20 or so. If you can find one.

Cheers

John

I had Danny Fudge on my radar to re-diaphram a Vac51 and a Striped Duofold, so it would be no problem throwing this one in the box as well. Thanks for the advice guys, and johnmc2, it may only be a Moore but the picture does not do it justice. It's a beautiful pen.

It sounds like you got one of the better Moore nibs which will make this even more special. If you send it to Danny he will make sure the nib is just right before he lets it go. I have a sister to your pen and enjoy it a lot.

By the way, try looking at the barrel and cap in sunlight. That brings out the colors even better.

Beautiful pen, Cryptos,

Looks like the same material as my Pre-Parker Valentine #4. You're right, a picture just doesn't catch the sparkle! (Especially my poor cell phone pics).

+1 on learning to service these yourself. You've caught the 'bug' for finding them, I submit to you that there is an even greater satisfaction in restoring and maintaining them yourself!

Best of luck,

Oh indeed!

In sunlight it fair sparkles. Probably the most eye-catching pen I have. Paid $25 for it because I didn't know anything about Moore pens but someone said the nibs can be flexible. Took a plunge, paid too much (right?), and yet... if it scrubs up well I cannot help but thinking 'What's not to like?' here.

Cryptos,

If it cleans up well and you like the way it writes, you didn't overpay for it. I'd rate the older Moore's like a second tier pen. It looks very nice!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
