The Clipped Nib... Ideas And Opinions?

I've seen a nib or two in my short time repairing these that had the 'iridium' snapped off or one sided. My limited data set has seen this phenomenon mostly manifest in older Sheaffers and to a lesser extent Dunns and Conklins, but I've never seen a goofed Parker, Eversharp, or Pelikan... I've had Parker Vacumatics come in bent all over the place and looking like goal posts and have been able to coax the tines back into proper shape with some gentle persuasion and the tips remained intact... A little pressure with an older Sheaffer and 'click' off the tips come nice as you like...

Now, since original tipped nibs are fairly rare (and fairly expensive) What is the spectrum of opinion on shaping and tuning just the gold into a decent relief or broad or oblique nib? Upsides?, downsides?

This older vac-fill came in from the wild with no tips.... I used a sharpening stone and a smoothing pad to work it into a medium stub and it actually writes pretty good and doesn't snag at all...

Thanks in advance for any opinions on this topic!

Writing on the gold will wear that down pretty fast probably. Very soft metal after all.

My Pens/Nibs (inked/active): Lamy Studio/Vista/Joy (XXF slight-flex custom | 14k EF | EF | F | 14k M | M | B | 14k 1.1 custom | 1.1 | 1.5 | 1.9), TWSBI Diamond 580 (F | Pendleton BadBoy | Zebra G | F.P.R. semi-flex), Pilot Falcon EF, Penkala Vintage 14k semi-flex, Pilot Parallel (2.4 | 3.8 | 6.0)

http://www.fp-ink.info/img/button.pngI'm still looking for help/data/supporters/sponsors for my Ink Database - It already contains over 900 Inks but is still low on data about the inks except on the Inks I got myself or where I found nice data sheets. So Im looking for these: InkSamples mailed to me, Permissions to use InkReviews - preferable by people who have a lot of InkReviews online, InkReviews mailed to me so I can scan them, Sponsors that will help me to finance InkSamples, People willing to trade InkSamples (list of available Inks from me is available via PM request - please include available Inks)

Wow- Czech,

I posted a reply awhile ago to you,but I guess it didn't stick...basically what Bardir said.

"Not a Hooker Hooker, but rather a left-handed overwriter."

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
