Did This Montblanc Deserve To Repair

I bought a second-hand fountain pen, the patron of art Peter the great from the eBay.

The description of the item was good in function.

But the pen was broken when it arrived. The broken part was inner plastic barrel like the picture.

The seller told me the pen can be repaired at Montblanc service but the certification was not stump by the origin store (He said that he bought it from NY montblanc store last Nov.)

He also told he can refund USD 100 for repairment.

I ask the montblanc service but they did not want to answer the approximate price for repairment.

Does it deserve to repair it?

Is there anyone know how much does it cost to repair it?

Does this story sound fishy to me only?

My Pens/Nibs (inked/active): Lamy Studio/Vista/Joy (XXF slight-flex custom | 14k EF | EF | F | 14k M | M | B | 14k 1.1 custom | 1.1 | 1.5 | 1.9), TWSBI Diamond 580 (F | Pendleton BadBoy | Zebra G | F.P.R. semi-flex), Pilot Falcon EF, Penkala Vintage 14k semi-flex, Pilot Parallel (2.4 | 3.8 | 6.0)

http://www.fp-ink.info/img/button.pngI'm still looking for help/data/supporters/sponsors for my Ink Database - It already contains over 900 Inks but is still low on data about the inks except on the Inks I got myself or where I found nice data sheets. So Im looking for these: InkSamples mailed to me, Permissions to use InkReviews - preferable by people who have a lot of InkReviews online, InkReviews mailed to me so I can scan them, Sponsors that will help me to finance InkSamples, People willing to trade InkSamples (list of available Inks from me is available via PM request - please include available Inks)

A pen that was good in description arrived broken, the guarantee card is not filled so no guarantee on anything, the seller offers to refund a nice sum of money pretty instantly? This sounds broken on departure and trying to get rid of it with the least money wasted.

Sorry to post it twice.

After post it at repair Q&A, I find that it is much suitable at here.

But I did not know how to delete the topics.

Dose anyone have some idea ?

Should I return the pen ?

By the way, I ask the Montblanc store in NY and they said they did not sell this pen last Nov.

I had a hard choice between wasting about 100 dollar to send it back or repair it with 100 dollar refund.

Does anyone know how much does it cost to repair it ?

I already take it to MB but they did not give me the quote.

They said they will send it to Germany and then give me the quote after checking condition of the pen.

But it will spend about one month.

The ebay refund protection need to send the request in one month after receiving the item.

It is the hard point. So I ask the expert in the forums for help.

You could get it quoted and then ask the seller to refund the entire quote cost or just send it back and look for one that doesn't have problems.

I believe you have 45 days after latest delivery time to file a dispute.

I would ask someone near you to inspect that pen for other hidden damages!

Since the seller lied to you about the origin of the pen it's obvious that something is fishy here.

It depends really on two things, the first how much you paid for it,and secondly how much it would cost to repair it ($100 would not cover it). If you bought it at a very good price and the repair cost would mean that it would still be a bargain, then go for it,but press for a greater refund.

If,however, the price you paid was a fair price for a pen in good condition, then you might not find it worthwhile to repair. The seller has already accepted responsibility by offering you $100 for the repair, so you should have no problems getting a full refund.

I am surprised that Montblanc could not even give you a rough estimate, and waiting at least a month could mean you would be too late to open a case with Ebay.

Seems like the inner barrel is torn apart.

I agree, the threaded barrel end looks sheared off;

Note i'm not familiar with the inner construction of this typical pen, but - seeing there is still a part of threads intact- i think the pen can be repaired.

Only possible drawback being that the piston stroke will become somewhat shorter.

I all depends of the price you paid, when you've bought it cheap, i would opt for the partial refund of €100.

When you've bought it at the normal second hand price i would opt for a full refund.

I don't think you can rely on getting this fixed in Hamburg during the time restriction for filing an ebay claim. It will also be a more costly fix than $100.

I would therefore return it and request a full refund

Usually, repairs fall under three levels of service from Montblanc. Montblanc will not want to tell you the cost of replacing a particular part without seeing the pen but they should be able to tell you the cost of each service level. If you assume this may fall under service level two as the worst case scenario, you should be able to call MB and ask what the level two service cost is. At least I can do that here in the U.S. It is also possible special editions, POAs, etc. may use a different pricing structure.

Chunya's advice is also great. If you didn't get a great deal on the pen, it may not be worth the time and hassle of getting it fixed.

I keep thinking about selling some of my pens but all that happens is I keep acquiring more!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
