I Came For The Colour, I Stayed For The Sheen

I really wanted an electrifying blue, that shaded well without sacrificing usability. I should be able to work on short stories and write letters with it without it becoming exhausting to look at etc. Diamine Majestic Blue seemed like the way to go. Anyway, this ink does that just fine, and I couldn't be more pleased with the results. Then, one day, I found it, the illusive sheen. I never understood what everyone was so infatuated with, "pffff sheen meen" I would scoff, "who cares?". But boy, was I wrong! It adds a whole new dimension to the colour, and makes you want to hold it into the light just so. I can't get enough of this sheen stuff. Not all nibs give me the sheen, my Pelikan M800 medium nib shows little to no sheen, and my Waterman Persian semi-flex nib gives me so-so sheen. The best results I get with my Montblanc 225 OBB which lays down a wet line with insane sheen-ige. All hail the sheen! (It was extremely difficult to photograph with the camera on my phone, this was the best I could do- there's way more sheen than can be seen)

I have some Majestic Blue at home. If I recall correctly, the sheen is a reddish colour, right?

Yep, the sheen is red. The first time I saw it it actually reminded me of the kind of red sheen you'd get with black ballpoint ink. Maybe it has a similar dye component?

Great photograph to capture that sheen.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Very cool sheen in your excellent photo. I have some marble ink gel pens that change color as you write. Your ink example comes the closest I've seen to mimic color change. I don't really need another blue ink....

I'll have to keep this one in mind though. Thank you for posting your experience and the photo.

Hello MBFan,

This ink has always intrigued me because from the pictures I've seen, it reminds me a lot of Penman Sapphire, but I was put off on buying it based on comments I read about it being really difficult to flush and some people were having start-up and skipping problems. Have you experienced any of these issues? (I'm glad to read you've used it in several pens).

Best regards,

Chris

This was the first bottle of ink I purchased, having only previously used ink cartridges before. I still adore it; it really is a magical colour. It shades extremely well and provides a luminous sheen with the right pen and paper combination.

I'm still not sure why "need" enters into the equation....

Just ignore the enabler. :P

That's a really nice sheen, does it dry to the touch? I've noticed some inks' sheen will stay wet and smudge even several days later.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
