Where To Source Leather For Midori Style Notebook (Usa)?

Hello all,

I've been hankering to make my own Midori style notebook. I have the passport version and want to branch out into larger paper sizes.

I plan to make my own inserts (1/2 letter sized) and want the flexibility of owning my own leather (rather than buy pre-sized notebooks from etsy or whatnot).

I've read a fair number of posts here on FPN on DIY Faudoris and everyone seems to skip over how they actually sourced their leather. The leather shops around me don't actually sell cut leather to individuals (unless I want to buy a huge huge roll of leather for several hundred dollars!)

Does anyone know of an affordable website (that has reasonable shipping to the US

) to source ~2-3mm vegetable tanned leather? I'm looking for pieces larger than 8.5 x 11

Please be as specific as possible. Sourcing the leather is probably the most difficult part of this otherwise very rewarding process.

Thanks!

I've made two with the idea that they would be test pieces to see how to improve the design so I didn't make a bad one with a decent piece of leather.

First stop - charity shop looking for a leather coat/skirt/trousers/bag/anything.

Second stop - upholstery shop making sofa and car seat covers.

I made the first one from imitation red leather that was a coat from the charity shop and the second from a gorgeous browny gold leather offcut from the upholstery shop. The first one came out the best and I use it everyday!

Tandy Leather. Have both bricks and mortar and online.

I purchased a half shoulder for about $20 and got 3 Travelers notebook size, 4 Field Note size and a pencil case out of it. The leather might have been a second, but it worked. While you're looking, get some leather dye too.

I got some nice soft thin leather for covers for pocket notebooks, on etsy. Great prices, quick shipping , lots of colours. Thin enough you can sew it on a conventional sewing machine. This is thinner, lighter than the Davis Leather or Midori ones.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
