$40,000 Parker Pen?

I was wondering if Parker had a limited edition pen.

Looks like I found it: http://www.parkerpen.com/wcsstore/NewellCatalogAssetStore/Attachment/US/EN/PDFs/PARKER_Duofold%20Giant%20Limited%20Edition_Press%20Release_September%202013.pdf

But if you look at the price section (in the box), it says: "30 000€ (40 177.05 USD)."

I know that this is a dumb question, but I'm kind of doubting myself.

Is that pen really $40,000? Am I seeing it right?

I know that fountain pens are expensive, but $40,000? Wow.

Well.. it contains some solid gold parts, a diamond? and it's limited to 125 But yes, that pricetag is plain stupid....

My Pens/Nibs (inked/active): Lamy Studio/Vista/Joy (XXF slight-flex custom | 14k EF | EF | F | 14k M | M | B | 14k 1.1 custom | 1.1 | 1.5 | 1.9), TWSBI Diamond 580 (F | Pendleton BadBoy | Zebra G | F.P.R. semi-flex), Pilot Falcon EF, Penkala Vintage 14k semi-flex, Pilot Parallel (2.4 | 3.8 | 6.0)

http://www.fp-ink.info/img/button.pngI'm still looking for help/data/supporters/sponsors for my Ink Database - It already contains over 900 Inks but is still low on data about the inks except on the Inks I got myself or where I found nice data sheets. So Im looking for these: InkSamples mailed to me, Permissions to use InkReviews - preferable by people who have a lot of InkReviews online, InkReviews mailed to me so I can scan them, Sponsors that will help me to finance InkSamples, People willing to trade InkSamples (list of available Inks from me is available via PM request - please include available Inks)

Yea, that's the right price.

Parker, in order to celebrate their innovation and design leadership, came out with the most boringly bland-shaped pen they could think of (it doesn't even look like a modern or vintage duofold, it's just a straight pen...) and fixed it up with the most unoriginal and uninnovative filing system they could find.

Then, realising that they have a plain pen that was nothing special, they slapped solid 18k gold around the body and 18k of diamonds.

Then they got the idea to charge $35,000 for it because it is such a fine piece that celebrates all their innovation (that they completely abondenned 50+ years ago).

I'd be interested in knowing how you really feel about this pen.

That is how I feel about the pen.

I actually like the pen a lot - the 'giant' Duofold is a concept that definitely needs to be revived. The price, of course, is madness - unless you are a Saudi Prince or a Russian Olygarch etc.

I think everyone just feels like that. It's a very plain pen base. Subtract the diamonds and replace gold with silver and I would actually find this a nice pen. I like a minimalistic design, but I don't like gold for anything but nib core material, I don't like gold color at all.

Plus I really don't like diamonds within pretty much anything, I think it's the most overrated decorative material ever, looks like glass to me. Give me that with a smaragd or an amethyst and you're way more into my color spectrum but still way too blingy for my taste on a pen. And then cover that up with that price tag and I instantly get sick of it.

Not in my price range for anything I would want to use but yes, that's a lot nicer pen actually. At least imho.

On another thread, in response to the question, what makes expensive pens worth it?, I identified four reasons. One is investment value. If a buyer has $40,000 to invest on the assumption that in 20 years it could increase in value substantially, and have a conversation piece in the meantime, then they might go for it. To make that decision, a prospective buyer would want to know more than what's in the brochure, especially about the quality of the diamonds. $40,000 is a pittance compared to the Fulgor Nocturnus that sold for $8 million at auction.

Perhaps they are all are pre-sold? Stands to reason those wealthy people you mention make their own market and Parker probably has a list to whom these are offered to. Because I'm sure they don't make them and cross their fingers and hope they will sell.

You're probably right. What I find funny is that along with the diamond-studded pen and lacquered gift box, buyers get a bottle of black Parker ink.

I love gold - the warmth of the yellow metal enriches the pen - and gold goes well with practically any colour. But I also like white metals - silver, platinum etc.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
