Uk Chaps - How Do You Get Hold Of Noodler's Inks?

Hi all,

I'm in the UK but have fallen in love with a small number of Noodler's Inks, not to mention their fab pens. Purepens.co.uk seem to be the only stockist here and they have a tiny selection, but I've just managed to buy some Blue Ghost from them - I've been lusting after that ink for ages as I mainly write to my godchildren and they will LOVE any secret messages I'll include in my letters! I also bought some Bulletproof Black as it has such good reviews.

So, my question is - what's the best way to get hold of Noodler's Inks if you live in the UK? I ordered some sealing wax from Atelier Gargoyle and got absolutely hammered by import tax/the post office's £8 "admin fee" so I'm nervous of ordering anything over £16 from a shop outside the EU.

Ideally I'd get BSB, Black Swan in English Roses and Apache Sunset to begin with. Sorry if this question comes up a lot! I did do a search but couldn't find anything.

Thanks,

Anna

I live in US and was checking The Writing Desk's website to confirm they carry Noodlers since I have had exceptional service when buying from them, only to find that they say that Noodlers is no longer exported from the US. Gouletpens.com ships internationally, so maybe try them? But you are best served waiting for members in UK to share their thoughts.

Hello,

I ship to the UK every day or two. I have every single color in stock and almost every single pen in stock.

www.jandjwooddesigns.com

Yes this is an ebay store, but feel free to check my record/feedback. I have another shipment coming in tomorrow. I should have it listed by Tuesday evening. I have BSB, english roses, and apache all in stock right now. If you want you can send me an offer and I'll give you a discount. I'd do $11 per ink. Shipping is $14 for the first item and $3 for each additional. On 3 bottles your looking at $20 shipping. If you are interested or have any questions just let me know.

Take care,

Jeff.

Come see some of my handmade pens!!!

Hi Jeff, that's great, thank you! I'll take a look. My main worry is though, that here in the UK we get charged a small amount of "import tax" on parcels that are marked to show the contents are worth more than about £16 (about $26) and our postal service also charges £8 (an extra $13) as an "admin fee" on top of that, making buying from businesses rather expensive. However, parcels from private individuals that are marked as containing "gifts worth less than £36" ( $80) don't incur these extra charges.

If I know somebody that is travelling to the USA, I will order from Goulet Pens and arrange for it to be delivered to whichever hotel my relative or friends are staying with, and they bring a couple of bottles back for me that way.

I've had a few bottles of Noodlers from the USA, as well as the FPN inks.

To me, it has always been worthwhile to stump up the import/admin fees...it's either that, or do without the inks. :crybaby:

That's a great offer from Jeff.

I think you need to pay extra for taxes also if you buy from the US.

What I would do is buy your three inks, but as seperate orders; so in total you'll have three individual packages come, and you won't have to pay outlandish taxes.

Writing Desk used to stock Noodlers but now Pure Pens have taken up the challenge. Availability to them is sporadic and their stock are low now but they have a message on their website that a new delivery is due very soon now.

I have bought from them a couple of times and found them good. http://www.purepens.co.uk/

I have bought from Jeff's eBay store (www.jandjwooddesigns.com) and the service was excellent. I just accept the risk that some parcels will be stopped at customs and I'll be hit by the import VAT and admin fee. I have noticed though that my last 3 packages have not been stopped. If the custom label is marked stationery or writing inks, they seem to be allowed through more often.

UK member ajlmarques has also organised a group buy in the past, so it may be worthwhile contacting him?

I also look out for single/part bottles for sale in Classifieds. They never seem to be stopped at customs and if the seller marks it as a gift and will post 1st class international USPS, the cost isn't too high. You just take a risk that it isn't insured/trackable.

That is brilliant, thanks everyone! And especially Jeff - I will definitely put an order in with you :) Migo, how many inks have you bought at once that have got through customs without incurring import tax? I don't mind the tax as it's usually only a couple of quid, but the extra £8 that the Post Office charges for "admin" is very annoying and bumps up the price a lot.

I was really chuffed to have got the Blue Ghost from Purepens - if only they could stock more colours! I guess they went for the more popular colours but after reading ink reviews I'd rather have Apache Sunset than the Habanero that they've currently got.

IIRC, it was 4 bottles. It's just "pot luck" in the end, whether they get through or not.

Have you tried Apache Sunset yet?If you like it, you could try the new Diamine Autumn Oak. Not quite the same, but a very attractive colour in itself, and an inexpensive alternative if you buy the 30ml bottle from CultPens. Search on here as there are reviews of it.

That £16 should be £15. The details for importing are now here

Please ensure that you ask the sender to only declare the item value. Not the shipping inclusive value. The item value can also be the original purchase price, or original value, not whatever someone decided to bid on ebay.

Thanks Chrissy, that's helpful :) I bought samples of Apache Sunset and and Black Swan/English Roses and fell in love with them so I know I definitely want those, and I hear such good things about the appearance of BSB despite the pen-staining issues (I'd have a new Lamy Safari dedicated to it).

I see Jeff also sells pens, which is great as a friend is after an Ahab. I managed to get one from Ebay without incurring any import/admin fees and I love love love that pen!

Oh and I'll help you out on the import tax too.

Do you pre pay the import tax when sending to europe? and charge it from the customer on checkout?

Anna, if Purepens still has the Habanero, get it, it's a fantastic ink. I have Apache Sunset and have always loved it for its shading, but the habanero shades equally well and it's a much richer colour.

Wouldn't it be great if Nakaya used TWSBI piston fillers instead of Platinum cartridge converters?

If you're able to do that Jeff then you're likely to get a lot of business from me going forward! :)

I've had PMs from some kind forum members who have offered me BSB and Apache Sunset so I'm sorted for those, but there are always going to be Noodler's inks that I'd like, and I love the Ahab pen that I own so I would like to buy more pens too.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
