J Vs. Sj Ink Capacity.

Does the Esterbrook J holds more ink than a SJ? I would theorize it should, but one never knows.

I have the opportunity to buy a J, but would only buy if it can hold more ink. I already have 5 SJs

I need a quick yes or no, please.

If you keep the pen in stock condition, then yes ink capacity does not change. However you can remove the sac guard in the Esterbrook J, and substitute the standard #16 for a #18 ink sac. I've done this before (penfisher told me about this trick) and it works quite nicely, increasing the ink capacity a little bit. I doubt this would be possible with an SJ.

I was told #16 sac, 1-15/16 inch long on all J series pens.

So even though the barrel is longer on the LJ and both longer and wider on the J, the ink sack is the same size as the ink sack on the SJ.

I would get the J if only to have a different style pen to go with your SJs.

i bought the J because all that i had are SJ's.. They are so cute. All with different nibs. Love them! i was thinking, maybe the J's ink will last longer…. Darn!

The sac tray is frequently lost in J's, so an #18 would then fit and give a small increase in capacity. Using F and EF units would stretch ink further. I like thin lines but must admit that x668 M's write very smoothly.

I say buy the ones you like for whatever reason you like them. Refilling Estie J-LJ-SJ is so easy even I can do it.

I can never get the dang things out. :D I suspect previous repairmen pulled them out, and that it also was somewhat of a running change, although I have seen them inside late transitionals

Testify!

I drove myself the rest of the way foaming at the mouth rabid crazy one night trying to get one out.

I GOT It Out but it was an Ex-sac tray when I was finished with it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
