Leak With A New Platinum 3776 Century

Hello,

I have a new Platinum 3776 Century and it appears to be leaking from the space between the nib and the body. I've used it for a few days and on one ocassion it emptied the entire converter into the cap and when I opened the cap all the ink poured over my hands and clothes :(.

Pic of the leak.

Has anyone seen anything like this?

Re-seating the nib and the feed will most likely fix the problem. They are friction fit, so you can simply pull them out, align them, and put them back in.

Do you have a 5x (or better) loupe to check out the collar? I think there might be a small crack in there somewhere, otherwise I'm really not sure what could be causing this.

Another thing I've read may cause leaks is having the converter or cartridge not be pushed in all the way, but that seems unlikely (although it wouldn't hurt to check and push it in, just in case)

Same thing happened to a 3776 Century I had. The friction fit did not. The nib and feed rotated way too easily in the section and leaked all over the place. I even tried wrapping the feed with teflon tape, didn't work. Threw it out. Waste of money.

Have a look inside this Pilot Custom Heritage 92. Instead of relying on the just the tightness of the friction fit between the section and the nib & feed, there's a sort of softish silicon area that seals against the back end of the feed. I thought that was pretty neat. Touch of quality you wouldn't notice normally.

That bit is made out of urethane. A lot of Pilot Custom pens have it to seal the end of the feed better. I think it's a nice touch.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
