Has Anyone Heard Of "lloyd's" Fountain Pens?

Hi: I bought a pretty little (very little!) pen that looks like it's from the 1930s, a button-filler, and I can't seem to find any information on it. I want to say that the name says it should be an English (or US) company that has long since disappeared.

Does anyone know anything about this kind of pen?

That plastic looks very familar, does it have a brass insert on the button filler collar?

Perhaps it was sold by or given to staff at Lloyds of London, where fountain pens are still in daily use by many of the underwriters.

What an interesting idea! I hadn't thought about the Lloyd's of London possibility. No, it doesn't have any brass that I can see. The clip is very pretty and snug, and from the diminutive size of it (4-3/8 inches closed), I would suspect it was intended for vest or shirt pockets.

Thanks for the intriguing idea!

I'm not very well versed in English pens, but it has a "Mentmore-ish" look to my eye. Perhaps a sub-brand?

Don't feel bad. I'm old; I'm meh about most things.

Interesting possibility. But from the photos I've seen of the Mentmores from the 30s, the clip has a rounded ball at the end, and this pen has an unusual tear-drop-shaped end.

Thanks for the feedback!

Some odd logic hear but bear with me.

I cannot think of any other pen brand where a plural is shown oe the possessive 's.

Therefore is it not likely that this is not a manufacturer but belonging to a company?

I think Lloyds of London is always plural and doesnt have 's

Lloyd's does have the apostrophe, the origin being Edward Lloyd's Coffee House. My father was the Head Waiter at Lloyd's back in the 80' or 90's but I don't remember him having a Lloyd's pen, he had a Conway Stewart long since lost unfortunately.

Well swipe me you are right. The sign outside the building says LLOYDS but the business on the website clearly says Lloyd's.

From what I can see, my older vintage Waterman pens (BCHR, #52) do have "Waterman's Ideal Fountain Pen" on the imprint of the barrel, and the Waterman Emblem model has "Waterman's Made in USA" on the cap.

But interestingly, while the pen imprint says "Lloyd's fountain pen", the nib simply has "Lloyd" with some type of crest underneath.

The mystery continues.. ;)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
