Interesting Notebooks Under $20?

Greetings,

I think I'm going on a FP hiatus but I'm interested if there are some unique notebooks that I haven't tried yet.

Owned:

  • Maruman Mnemosyne: too glossy/smooth
  • Tsubame: Ideal paper but doesn't lay flat
  • Clairefontaine: Nice paper but long drying times/pricey
  • Apica: NIce paper but too thin
  • Campus: Nice paper but too thin
  • Staples Eco-friendly paper: inconsistent quality
  • Whitelines:inconsistent paper but nice look
  • Rhodia: great paper but expensive
  • Tomoe River: Nice paper but expensive
  • Marble Composition books: Cheap but inconsistent
  • generic B&N journals: not as smooth as I prefer
  • Black N' Red notebooks: too glossy

I like JP notebooks and I am near Kinokuniya in NYC. I would like try Life notebooks but they tend to be expensive =(

No preference on paper weight, color, or cover material. It does need to be lined or dotpad because I can't write evenly otherwise. Thanks.

I prefer Midori MD paper to all of the papers you listed (okay not including Life and Tomoe River)

They also put MD paper in their World Meister's Note Series. I have reviewed all 4 editions:

I like the look of the notebooks. Great review site too, I'll follow it for the future.

Do you find the line spacing to be wide for some versions? I have small spidery handwriting.

Oxford notebooks! Affordable, well made, and the paper (optik paper as they call it) is excellent. They have a huge variety of models and sizes!

Thanks will check it out soon.

Being a Japanese company they don't have that wide of spacing. The grids are typically 5-6mm and the lined ones are about 7mm. I can double check that later today.

No problem, I think I have a good idea of the space now.

I would try the Muji Recycled paper notebook. Great paper. About 5-6$ for almost 400 pages.

Almost forgot Muji is in NYC too. I admit, I'd been more or less avoiding the store because it's in a busy area of the city.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
