Show Me Yours (Writing Desk!)

After a couple of mishaps, including an accident to the original one that I bought, and a dented car (too long to explain) when I first set out to collect this one, I finally bought home my 'new' bureau. I've always wanted one and this sort of dropped into my lap from a local auction, for a very reasonable price.

I've only given it quick going over with a duster, but it will need quite a bit of TLC, especially to the bottom drawers, and it will certainly test my rudimentary woodworking skills. Having looked over it, it displays quite a few DIY repairs already, but probably from the 19th C early 20th.

It's a George III and I think it dates from around 1800, and slightly wider than most I've seen. No secret compartments as such, but some strange compartmentalising of the drawers.

Care to share photos of yours? How about you Kosmic Kowgirl? :)

just gorgeous chunya! what a find!

this is my rescue, it sat in a garage/shop for years and was going to be tossed. Inside the little door is a tiny drawer and shelves. On the top is a jewelry box I store nibs and holders, and tools. The little curio holds the wax paraphernailia. The white thing is a big piece of leather I got to protect the surface, I plan to doctor it up sometime

That is a lovely piece, made all the more special by the fact that it was saved from being turned into kindling !

Looking at its width, It might have been made specifically to be a lady's bureau? Very appropriate.

Also,I do like your artwork, you are a talented young lady!

You two put me too shame. I need to start going to car boot sales to find something similar.

Chunya, what an amazing desk. Are the drawer pulls are a later replacement? They look very art nouveau to me.

Hi Thuja,

Thanks for he comment, and well spotted, and I am pretty sure that they are later; there were many a varied style used in that period, but what possibly suggests a later date, to me, are the screws, they are not as uniform as modern day ones, but I think too uniform for 1800!

I will be paying a visit to an antique 'warehouse',nearby, that has a massive collection of Victorian, Regency and earlier pulls, knobs and so on. I will be looking for a lock for it and also see what they have by way of pulls.

My Uncle and Aunt have a old, vintage desk that is very much like the one Chunya got, sitting in the corner of their big garage. It has been sitting there since I remember. I have asked for it, and have offered to get it restored and told them tha t I would actually use it for my writing desk. But, I havent heard back from them.

A gentle reminder, maybe? Tell them what a shame it is to have it sitting there .... Be extra nice ...... bunch of flowers? Chocolates? Bottle of single malt?

Chunya- I have tried, I have been talking to them since about 2005, trying to get the desk. But to no avail. Alas.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
