Opening My Snail Mail ... In Style (Letter Opener)

Polyhistor

Recommended Posts

Every gentleman's desk needs a classy letter opener. Even better if you can refurbish a vintage piece like this one ... I got it for 1€ and made a nice leather handle for it.

Cheers,

Adam

Nice work.

This is the accessory on my writing desk which perhaps gets the most use - endless opening cutting and fiddling jobs tackled every day.

Very nice looking letter opener, and a lovely handle you made to get the opener back in use. What is the blade made of, Polyhistor? On my screen, it looks like some sort of wood with a very nice grain, but that could just be reflection....

I am not a gentleman, but here is a picture of my letter opener; Georg Jensen Cactus Pattern, the handle is sterling silver, despite what the photo makes it look like - definitely a reflection:

It was my mother's, used by her almost daily from before I was even born, so I grew up with it and it has a lot of sentimental value as well as being quite beautiful, IMHO, but your letter opener is unique and it is very cool that, in part, you designed and made it!

Those are some nice openers! I use a cheap staples brand opener, jealous!

Wow, pakmanpony, that is a beauty, too!

I did a search, but found nothing: Did Parker make letter openers - or is that your Frankenopener that you put together(somehow)? Very, very cool, either way.

Thanks for the lovely comments, everyone! Been more or less afk for the weekend, so I'm a bit late in saying thanks.

You guys have some great letter openers there! I'm getting envious. :) OakIris & beak, yours are so different in style yet equally appealing. Hard to beat that handle. It just oozes vintage vibes.

OakIris, mine is actually made of metal. The pattern in the pic is just a reflection. Maybe I ought to make one of wood, though ... thanks for the inspiration! :)

pakmanpony, yours reminds me of a Fairbairn–Sykes combat knife – you only need to show that to a letter in order to make it open itself, right? ;)

I've found a few at estate sales. Though nothing really neat or interesting.

But some of the letter openers I have are like the steak knives at restaurants...DULL.

I have two that I have to put on a grinder to get anything like an edge on it. They are like pieces of metal with no edge beveling.

I must confess that I use a pocket knife to open mail. It's not quite the right shape for the task but manages okay anyway. On the plus side it is a Lionsteel Occam friction folder with olive wood scales. One of only 50 ever made (and somehow I have ended up with two of the beggars!).

Wow guys (and Gals) - puts me to shame (I use an old butter knife that belonged to my Grandad).

Looking at some of these I feel a sideline to pens coming on....

I like your letter opener, Sadiq. Simple yet elegant. How large is it? For some reason, I have the feeling that it is small but very efficient. lol

Using a pocket knife works, too; yours is especially pretty, Cryptos, and I bet that olive wood warms nicely in the hand.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
