A Geeky (And Unexpected) Pen Wrap

This afternoon when I checked my mail I found a surprise..

Rewind...

A couple of months ago a good friend of mine started asking questions about my pens. She's a crafty-artsy type and thought that the ability of write and draw with a more diverse palette would be fun. So after fielding a couple dozen questions from her I put together a little care package of pens for her to try out. Nothing spectacular--I loaded her Metropolitan, and Jinhao 159 and a Safari, along with a bottle of X-Feather and a few ink samples. She played with them for a few weeks and she would up keeping the Metropolitan and the ink. The Jinhao was too heavy for her, and the Safari was strictly a loaner. Since then she's picked up a couple of Pilot Parallels, as well.

Fast-Forward...

In today's mail I found a package from my friend. In and of itself, that was odd. After all I see her often--in fact I'll see her in a few days. In side the package was a handwritten thank you card (in X-Feather ;)) and a handmade pen wrap.

That's a sonic screwdriver charm on the end of the cord. This goes nicely with my Firefly pen wrap. :bunny01:

That's awesome. Any clue where she got the charm?

And did you say "Firefly pen wrap"? Pix, or it didn't happen in the 'verse!

I can overlook the "Doc Whomever" stuff, but you can't claim to own a Serenity inspired wrap without supporting photographs! Tempt me if you must, without a detailed closeup of the sonic screwdriver, it may exist no more than your supposed Firefly wrap.

Did I harass you enough for pictures?

Edit: oh, I see. You post pics before I post my witty reparté and shame you into doing it. Clever.

Sadly I can't see it well on my tablet. PM me and I'll give you my address so you can send it for me to examine more closely.

(Anyone think he fell for that?)

Ill-u-min-nate! ;)

I have some hard-core Whovian friends who run podcasts dedicated to Doctor Who; I'll definitely have to show them this.

That is pretty awesome. I think my brother needs one of these -- and he's not even a pen person.... Where did you get it?

I had it custom made by a member of FPN (Daisy25). I supplied the charm (from Etsy) and the outer fabric (from Spoonflower).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
