Fountain Pen Hospital

I am in midtown for the week (for work), maybe 5 miles from the FPH. Is it worth ubering (or biking) over for a look? Thanks.

Absolutely! I've been to NYC twice in the last few years and always make time for a trip to see them. You won't regret it.

Sure, but no need to uber, taxi, or bike...take the subway.

from Grand Central, downtown 4, 5, 6 to Brooklyn Bridge, walk across City Hall Park to Warren St, half block further to FPH.

from Times Square, downtown R to City Hall stop, 1/2 block away from park to FPH.

You're even just thinking about it?!?!

I'll have to go in the evening, so it will be a $40 trip (unless I can take a citibike there) and I want to make sure it will be worth it. There is 0 chance of me taking the subway alone at night carrying either resources sufficient to go shopping or the result of the shopping trip. I'd do it in the daytime but I will be working then. Excited to go see it!!!

I was impressed you knew the way that well, but I see you are a native. Still, that was a fast response. Edited by Elle_

Yes!!!

However, be aware that FPH closes at 5:30 PM, but it is well worth the trip. It is one of the last and finest dedicated fountain pen shops in the country.

No worries about being on the subway at night. It's very safe and if you're in midtown it will be mostly tourists and business people.

Absolutely worth visiting. Guess it is still the only Fountain pen shop in NYC with a substantial number of Fountain pens.

Visited them a couple of months ago. Went by Metro/Subway. Perfect, fast and cheap.

I would not go after 5 PM. I believe they close at 5.30 PM.

Do not forget to take your Credit Cards with you. You'll probably end up needing them.

Have fun.

Absolutely, go!

You are also a short walk to the World Trade Center Memorial, well worth the effort too.

The memorial is breathtaking. It is one of the few things in New York I have made a point of seeing, but it is easier to get colleagues to go see it than to go to a fountain pen store. Which is right, but maybe I should have used the opportunity to get over there. I missed it today but will try to get there tomorrow.

I had an afternoon free when I was in NYC several years ago. It was worth it to me. I'd suggest extending your trip a day.

The more I know about computers, the more I like my pens.

After the recent demise of the Art Brown store (through no fault of their own) no FPN member should miss going to the Fountain Pen Hospital. Through dealing with them on-line via their weekly specials you would be hard-put to find a more agreeable and courteous group of people. As has been said it is one of the few remaining B&M pen stores left and one of NY's (and pendom's) treasures. I echo others in saying take a day and walk around that part of Manhattan. There are many historical sites and a round-trip ferryboat ride would be relaxing as well as providing a view of the city from another perspective. A glance at a guidebook might be worthwhile. Have a good trip

Absolutely worth going! Usually most of the staff are around; when I stopped in last summer I had a chance to talk with Ed Fingerman, the man in charge. All great folks. And a selection of both new and vintage almost impossible to beat!

You should definitely go. It is a wonderful store, helpful people

and a very good selection of pens.

And if you are lucky, Mrs. Brown ( Art Brown ) will be there. She

works there a few days a week.

Your mentioning Ed Fingerman as the man in charge speaks to his love for what he does. I have hassled him several times, via email, about one pen being better than another. He has always gotten back with me, to agree or tell me why I was wrong. The funny thing is, until you just mentioned that Ed is the man in charge; I never knew it.

If I could arrange it and I was in town, I would certainly do so.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
