Inky T O D - Show Me The Shade ... Please

As I write, it is 108 F (42 C) in Las Vegas, with 22 % Humidity and Wind at 3 km/hr.

SO, I want to talk about SHADE. I'm sure it's cooler in the shade!

Show us your best shading inks and any tips or tricks you have for getting more shade.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

30C and 54% right now up here in Canada. I know that so far north you would had expected some ideal 23C but it ain't happening. The temperature scale here is discrete and binary - we have -30C and +30C only, with no gradations in between. :headsmack:

There is always the ever faithful Apache Sunset for shading....though it may be a tad warm for such a warm color.

94F(34C)/14% RH N @ 8 mph(12 kmh) here at 8:06 pm MDT, the high here today was high 90's.

I found Pelikan 4001 Blue Black in my M205 with a fine nib a nice shader. It isn't eye popping like Apache Sunset, but so what?

I guess there will be a lot of Apache Sunset so I'm not posting that then...

The left one is Diamine's Yellow with a drop of Monaco Red. It makes quite a shading! It's written with a Lamy Vista 1.9 nib.

The right one is R&K Alt-Goldgrün that everyone knows about, written with a Noodler's Ahab.

28C and the exact same 54% here today, too. Canadian prairies! Where else can you get an actual 80C variation between the coldest and hottest days of the year?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
