Yard Sale Find

I found all of these plus some Cross and other Sheaffer ball points and pencils yesterday at a yard sale.

A Sheaffer set, two other Sheaffer pens, two Parker 51s, a Parker 61, A parker 51 special, a Parker 75,

and my favorite a Parker 51 special set with a gold nib, new in the box. Not a bad group for $6 total.

Congrats on your findings, no need to bet on the lottery anymore, you wasted all your luck on these (just kidding ;) ).

That truly is amazing. I don't know how many yard sales I've been to with no pens at all for sale. So many in fact, I've given up on them as a waste of time. It looks like I'll be wasting a little more time. Enjoy your booty. (You know what I mean.)

Nice haul you got there. :puddle: You *do* realize that you have probably most assuredly just won the "Sumgai of the Month" award.... Stuff like this never happens to me. :wallbash:

Sigh. I stuck my nose in at an estate sale this afternoon and all I saw was a sterling silver body mechanical pencil in sufficiently poor condition I didn't bother to even ask the price.

I luck out at garage sales once in a while, but so far never a haul like that. Congrats.

So far I've had better luck with kitchen knives than pens at yard sales. Congratulations on your find.

Well to be fair, I have to admit that these pens are not all in perfect shape. Most will need new insides, except for the 51 special set and some have a small dent or irregularity including the 61 which has a cracked shell, but for the price I am very happy. Not that I would ever do it, but I think the gold in the nibs is worth more than I paid for the lot. A lot of the other ball points and pencils had the logos of Esso and Exxon, so I am sure they were originally give aways.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
