Greetings All FPN

First off if the FPN Masters need to relocate this post to the history section fine with me.

I am re reading the Parker Vacumatic book pages 258-259 design pencil section and it is written that pen sets were available but only 1 in 6 customers purchased a pen set. Now in the middle of the depression a person would only buy a FP and not a pencil. My question to you all as a pen collector/user would you buy a Vac pencil today to make a FP set or would you not even care to ? Now I see Vac pencils for sale online on different sites at a wide price range I look for the bargains & cap styles and purchase as need be.

I have at least a 2 pencils for every fountain pen that I have so I go the other way I look for a FP to match the pencil.

I just like putting pen sets together and it's a fun way of pen hunting in the wild & online.

Ken

Ken, I totally agree with you. I am always looking for pencils to match any fountain pens I have. I always try to buy the fountain pen and pencil as a set when possible. However, it is an enjoyable challenge to find pencils for those pens I have bought without a matching pencil. I have one vac pencil that I especially like which is the burgundy color with red lead.

I don't have any pencils in my collection and I don't actively seek out or collect them. I really only use fountain pens.

However, some pencils are much rarer and harder to get a hold of than their fountain pen counterparts. Vac Maxima pencils especially.

One other thing I have notice is that all the different style mechanisms for the pencils.

I try to swap out parts to make a complete pencil and sometimes I come across another Mechanism :wallbash: .

I just love a challenge to do more research on the pencils.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
