Bare-Bones Collection (Or Maybe Not So)

It's a funny thing, the pen I couldn't put down all last week was reduced to post-it note duty this morning.
I started out using it but it just seemed wrong so I'm stubbing instead.

I like having different pens for different purposes. I've been feeling a bit of satisfaction because I've trimmed my user group down to bare-bones, but when I came to list them it still came to 10 pens. Two are special purpose drawing pens and one a rollerball, but I still carry 10 pens.

That doesn't seem very bare-bones.

How do people get by with just one or two?

I'm waiting on two more in the mail and I have yet another model in my sights, but they'll bump out three current users if it turns out that I like them.
Whoa, I just remembered one that's coming in the mail is a set with a pencil (P45's) that will bump out the current pencil that I didn't even count.

That makes 11......

I could probably do without one of them, but why bother. If I have 10 I might as well have 11.

.....might as well have 30......NO! 11 is all I need.....

If you buy two 24-pen leather cases, they might never get filled...

heh heh heh.

I lie. The empty slots will draw more pens to you.

Even a 12 pen case will have an empty slot calling out to me to be filled.

I don't have any cases at all, but I think I need a couple of small ones. 2, 3 or 4 slot. If I can keep the slot count low I have some hope of controlling the numbers.

If I remember correctly, Mr. Chan does some very nice silk and suede 3+2 rolls, so does alc.

I'd love to get by with just one pen. Like the OP, it is nice to have a choice of inks and nibs.

I have learned, however, to limit how many pens are inked up at a time. If too many are inked up, they don't get used and other problems occur.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
