What Are Some Decent Papers (Tight Budget)

SkylarKnight

Recommended Posts

Hello!

So... I was told I should get some better paper x.x And here I am, asking for advice.

I am on an extremely tight budget, so getting Rhodia is out of question. So I wanted to know, what are some decent but not budget heavy papers? Right now I just use normal printer A4 paper and my school notebooks (dollar store stuff~ didn't need more for school.)

Thanks for your time,

-Winter Skylar V.

Edit:
Wanted to note but forgot. Amazon doesn't ship to Israel (They say they do, but whenever I try to buy anything from them they don't let me go trough with it.)

Composition notebooks that state on the back cover "Made in Brazil". I also second the Hammermill or HP 24lb paper.

At our office, people fax information for short-term use. The pages are discarded at day's end.

Some "last" pages are mostly blank. We have a large-blade paper cutter. I cut the 8-1/2 X 11 inch sheets, that have

blank areas, into 8-1/2 inch squares and 8-1/2 X 5-34 inch sheets. The squares are fashioned into 6 x 4-1/4 inch

envelopes that accept the sheets, folded in half, or full sheets folded into quarters.

20# Aspen 60 copy paper is quite satisfactory. 22# paper is better. I make the same envelope from resume paper, as

well as Clairefontaine Triomph sheets.

Making my own envelopes is fun.

Perhaps you could take a look at the Fabriano Ecoqua line? I've only recently discovered them and found that they are very FP friendly but at a much lower cost than Rhodia or Clairfontaine. (Being a student stinks - I feel your pain!)

Thankyou, I'll look into these :)

Edit:

Ebay doesn't sell those... at least, as long as you don't live in Italy.

Edit:

I just found some of my printer paper, Looks like it is gonna work with FP's..

Edit:

Yupp, seems like it works. So I found myself some paper for a while :) Thanks for all the suggestions!

(If anyone is wondering, I cannot give the name and brand of the paper, I have it laying around out of it's original package >.<)

Fabriano are notebooks. If you are looking for good quality writing paper for letters, as opposed to notebooks/notepaper, you won't need huge quantities I assume? My suggestion is Clairefontaine Triomphe writing pads in A4 or A5, lined or unlined. Can also buy matching envelopes. You could buy just one pad of 50 sheets, rather than a ream of laser printer paper which attracts huge shipping costs. The price is reasonable and the paper is beautifully smooth for fountain pens.

I think La Couronne du Comte will ship to you at a reasonable rate. http://www.lacouronneducomte.nl/webstore/main/clairefontaine-c-293_379.html

I recommend going to a local print shop and ask for sample sheets of what is available there locally. If it has to shipped to you, it will probably not be cost effective. Take a pen with you and try whatever looks interesting on the spot. They might charge you a few cents a sheet (whatever the local currency), but that's much better than buying a ream and then being disappointed. A local paper distributor will likely give you sample books of whatever they stock, another way to try before you buy.

Clairefontaine Velote 90g & Oxford Optic 90g spiral note books are very good, can be had in stapled notebooks also.

I really like both papers for fountain pens, just shows what the proper sizing can do. Both are 'good' school papers here in Germany.

Both are my first papers to test a new ink with. Very good papers, inexpensive.

Gold Fibre notebooks work well with finer nibs and inks that aren't prone to bleeding and feathering. (I heard Noodlers black is excellent on cheap paper, but I do not have any experience with it myself)

What is the consensus with the Levenger Legal pads? I think they have a smooth FP friendly finish. Buying them when they are not on sale , puts them close to Rhodia.

For general legal pad work , which Rhodia product fits that requirement? Is there a supplier that is competitive with that line?

Local scouts wanted to write letters to soldiers far from home. We "begged" a ten-pound box of remnants from the local print shop.

The scouts cut several hundred 8 inch by 5-3/4 inch sheet for writing, and approximately 80 sheets 8-1/2 inch square for making

6 x 4 envelopes. They used mostly ballpoint pens, but I donated a pink Sheaffer N-N fp, which they took turns using.

My best reward ? "Thanks ! Fountain pens are fun !" (Sink-me ! That was sweet ! )

I am a long time Levenger fan, but the last few times I ordered their legal pads, the quality was lacking and inconsistent. My fall back are the Ampad Gold Fibre pads available at Staples. Good results with my fountain pens and inks.

Hi Sasha Royale, thank you for the envelope idea ~ that does sound like fun! I will definitely be trying my hand at it.

  • 3 weeks later...

I just bought Hammermill 24 lb Premium Inkjet & Laser paper. It handles FP ink fairly well: one could use both sides despite some show through. However, the first 20 sheets I put through my laser printer created a jam, a jam that I have not been able to extract. Not encouraging if I need to print anything on the paper before writing on it. Hope this jam is just a fluke.

+1 on laser/copy paper, if it's smooth enough.

I ended up using the same notebooks (both stapled and glued) I used at school, made by local manufacturer "Pigna". Cheap, good quality, fp friendly, but I don't know how affordable they might be from outside Italy.

(On the other hand, if anyone happens here on vacation, any mall will have plenty.)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
