Montegrappa Kazan Fountain Pen

Hi,

Has anyone any experience of the LE Montegrappa Kazan FP? I have seen one up for sale, for a reasonable price (I think), but what are these pens like? Do owners actually use them or, because of the LE of only 500, are these pens for the cabinet?

There're two versions of Montegrappa Kazan and the new version(produced in 2012) has a overlay cap, forged body and more precise engraving on the pen body. But it also costs 3x more comparing to the first version.

It's a slim pen like Montblanc 146. And relatively heavy in weight. It's smaller than the general cosmopolitan editions.

The price is good for a small LE like this(relatively hard to find) If you like the design and the pen is fully functioning(you should check the piston if possible).

Hi Freakman,

Thanks for the info. This is the earlier version, with a silver overlay on barrel, with a silver crowned and banded green cap dating to 2009 I think, I'll have to check on that, and it seems to be in mint condition.

Thanks again.

Edited as I made error with description.

Enjoy the pen. If you will enjoy using it, use it. If you will enjoy looking at it, display it. It's your pen.

Hi jar,

If I buy it, it won't be purely for display, I really can't cope with that.

Hi Chunya

I have the Kazan 2011 since a few weeks and use it with great pleasure. A nice weight (i like heavier pens) and writes like a dream.

I can't remember exactly what year it's been produced. If it's in 2009. Then the piston issue should be fixed by that time.

Well it arrived today, a day late but no matter. A bit of a surprise, this is Number 1/500 ...please don't tell me it's not genuine :bunny01:

Looks like it's never even been inked, and the piston seems to be working smoothly. I'll try some water first

Everything looks right. The style of marking, placement, warranty book all look correct and period correct.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
