Allied Forces Germany and France

Pelikan 4001Violet & J.Herbin Poussière de Lune

Dear FPN Friens

Ink comparisons are nothing new. But I think they are nice and will do some more in the future… I thought well let’s give my comparisons a special name: Allied Forces. This way it may stand out and will be recognizable as my comparisons.

One thing is standard. I will always compare colours of the same colour family. All others are random. For example 2 countries or 2 Inks from the same country, “different” coulours from the same company or not etc etc.

In this comparison 2 different countries, 2 different brands, but the same colour family violet/purple

Here it is Pelikan 4001 Violet vs J. Herbin Poussière de Lune…. Wow that name is very poetic… I think Poussière de Lune sounds more eloquent than Moondust

I love bot the inks although they are totally different.

Down here are the technical specs (as suggested by Ann Finley 2007)

points 1-5 1 = :( 5= :)

Pelikan / Herbin

Fountain Pens: Lamy Joy 1,5 Italic / Kaweco Calligraphy Sport 1,5 Italic

Paper: Leonardo Ringbuch,,average quality school note book made in Austria

Drying time: normal nib fast points: 4

Flow: points: 4/%

Wetness: Pelikan points 3 Herbin points4

Bleeding: almost absent in both pens points: 5 :)

Shading: very nice points: 5 and 5 points :D :D

Feathering: 0.8 very little points: 5 / 1,5 little points 4

Waterproof: medum both inks survive a drop but not a swim points: 3

Package: simple bottle points: 2 (the bottle is not much of an issue to me it's the ink that counts)

Availabilty: Excellent :) EU/USA points: 5

fpn_1405414151__alliedforcessamplerfpn_z

I really love those colours.

Pelikan 4001 Violet

The Pelikan is more like a true Byzantin-ish??) purple. At first I thought t had too much of a female touch. That's is also what one member replied in my seperate review of Pelikan Violet. But on second glance I love it. I use it as a fancy marker... A text written with this ink jumps out in an elegant way.

J. Herbin Poussière de Lune.....

Wow I love this inks.... I love the name it sounds like a poet to my ears... I think the ink is very distinguished... I would call it amethist.

The availibility in the USA and EU is good. For all others on different continents....

Try Goulet pen or La couronne Du Comte.... Both companies have an excellent reputation and deliver worldwide. Nice from La Courone du Comte... If you order 4 Bottles of J Herbin you only pay 3 :) ....

I already own most of the Pelikan 4001 inks and I will start myself a collection of J Herbin :D .( I only have 5 now :( )

Regards Peter

fun, this comparison. Like it. Might like Poussière as too...

Dear Friend from Flanders.... First a tip... If you like Poussiere de Lune. Try the Herbin Terre de Feu too. Beautiful brownish red. I will post a review of that...

Silly question...

Since you are from Antwerpen and I am from Breda... I live in Austria now but visit Breda 3 or for times a year... It is time to visit your beautiful city then (it has been at least 3 years ago :-( :-( :-(....

Does your city have a nice Fountain Pen store too? Maybe I can visit it and drink a Koninckje afterwards...

Regards

Peter

Thanks for the comparison. I had been wondering what the 4001 Violet was like.

I have a sample of Poussière de Lune and wasn't that impressed with it. Quite disappointing, since I know a lot of people like it. However, I'm now thinking I might just want to get a sample of the 4001.

Oh, no! More inks for the DCSS shopping list! :gaah: (Shhh -- don't tell my husband.... he thinks I have too many pens and ink already....)

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Hello Ruth....

Nice that you like the violet. I advise you to use it in a medium nib. This way it looks more refined and a bit darker. I guess this is because of the shading.... Lovely purple.

Poussiere is bit of a greyish purple (amethist) I use it for normal writing in stead of blue and then it has a nice touch to it.

Since you live in the USA. I checked Goulet they have the 4001 Violet listed. One disadvantage over Europe though.

Here in Europe the 4001 is one of the oldest but cheapest series of quality ink. It csts here about $4,35 instead of $10,80

I did a review of Pelikan Brilliant Green too. Lovely refreshing green.... I won't tell your husband....

and er... the Royal lue is excellent too. It can mature like a good wine as I prooved in my review of Battle of The Royal kings.... 18 year old vs brandnew bottle of Royal blue..... Oh yes and brilliant black is brilliant too...

I only have to buy 4001 Brilliant red and brown then i have the complete series / bottles for only $23,50 :-) :-)

Well to conclude if you only want one bottle go for Goulet's excellent service.... If you want more concider ordering ove Europe

Regards

Peter

p.s. I will post a review of J Herbin Terre de Feu today. A very nice reddish brown or brownish red :-) and again I won't tell your husband :-) :-) :-)

The Pelikan 4001 inks have a reputation for being a little drier than some - good for "taming" a wet pen. Has that been your experience? I have Royal Blue, and find it flows relatively freely in one of my pens - but not in two others I've tried it in.

Hello Jamerelbe

The 4001 behave very well in a Lamy 1,5 nib.... Wet but contolled wet. In the cheap Online best writer 0.8 italic they tend to be dry, but that may be due to the pen and the nib (I have two of those).

In a normal say Pelikan M, Or broad nib they behave very well.

Nibs can differ for example I have a Kaweco sports Classic BB and the line is thinner than the Waterman Carene M nib....

Yes in my opinion they tame gusher nibs and they behave perfectly well in normal nibs... For about US $4,00 that's a bargain for a quality nib....

Hope this helped you a bit....

Regards Peter

By the way I have good experiences with J Herbin as well for taming gusher nibs. I once did a review of the 1670 blue (search under my name Morbus Curiositas>>> topics)

I today posted a review on J Herbin Terre de Feu... Earth brown reddish brown.... It behaved excellently, but i do not know whether you like the coulour...

Thanks for that: "tame" I don't mind, "dry" I find a disappointment. I've been looking for a decent burgundy/violet/purple of this kind of hue - so maybe this is the ticket! [Now to find an Australian supplier...]

Hi there is Larrypost.au in Australia ho sells a lot of Ink goodness. Thiis way you will save on shipping costs

I am in frequent contact with Dr Jansen the owner of De Atramentis.

I am helping him a bit with organizing the following

- Ink art contest. A contest of drawings/paintings made with inks (inks and a Fountain Pen can be won here)

- Testing and Promoting the new Document permanent Ink Colours

- Opening the online Ink art Gallery.

- Testing Wine Inks.

For these purposes I am in contact with Liz Steel an Australian artist www.lizsteel.com and member of Urban Sketchers.

She will help us out here. She has good contacts to Larry Post to.

I have already written an E-mail to La Couronne du Comte and they where glad to offer some help here. I Will do the same with Larry Post and write them an E-mail. Liz Steel believes there is a great demand for more permanent inks in the Urban Sketchers world. This might make it interesting for Larry Post to sell them

Burgundy Ink.

De Atramentis has vast array of wine inks. These inks are actually made of wine . For Example Burgungy, Bordeaux, Pinot Noir and Merlot and many more... These of course have a Burgundy colour.

Dr Jansen sent me a bottle of Merlot and some of the new Document Colours for reviewing purposes. I will review these as soon as I receive the bottles... So you might consider waiting a bit longer

Regards

Peter

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
