Need Some Help With The Esterbrook Renew-Point Nib Unit Dimensions

Recommended Posts

I hope someone who has the nib unit and a pair of vernier calipers can tell me the dimensions noted in the sketch. I know the threads are 9/32inch 36tpi.

I believe the nibs themselves were longer or shorter depending on the series as I read from an article. It will be excellent if the longest and widest nib's dimensions can also be provided.

Thanks!

Hari

Hari --

here are the measurements from a couple of units I have to hand now. One is a 1555 the other a 2668, both fairly common. The third is a 2442 (which is installed in a pen and inked, so only a couple of measurements are easy to take.)

1555 / 2668 / 2442

A: 0.765 / 0.892 / 0.910

B: 0.515 / 0.515 / ...

C: 0.130 / 0.137 / ...

D: 0.400 / 0.385 / ... (I recommend you use B - C, it's more accurate!)

E: 0.250 / 0.251 / ...

F: 0.258 / 0.275 / 0.276

(all measurements inches)

Hope this helps -- I really enjoy making pens that take Esterbrook Renew-points, both my regular use pens are this type.

Duncan,

Thank you so much, Immensely helpful. I just bought a 9xxx series nib off Nishimura's website, so that I can make some trial units.

You're welcome, Hari.

Do be careful with that dimension A -- the first cap I made was the right internal length for one nib unit but destroyed another! It's probably best to allow extra space inside the cap (I usually aim to allow 1", but always check carefully the first time I screw the cap onto the pen.)

If you need other units, I have quite a few -- but they are the boring series 1xxx and 2xxx, not the up-market 9xxx.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
