Diy Pen Case Writing Box

Recommended Posts

Wasn't sure if there was a DIY pen case thread so thought I would share some of my very basic DIY efforts from the weekend to give others some inspiration.

I had wanted to purchase a large wooden writing box for some time in order to store my notepads and extremely modest fountain pen collection (quickly growing). Needless to say this passion was quelled quite quickly once I saw the prices modern writing boxes go for, especially when adding postage to little old Australia. I put the idea on ice for a while before I finally decided to attempt create my own.

I started by purchasing the below box off the bay for a bargain $30. It was a beautiful two tone, Deco looking thing and knew from the dimensions it would make a decent candidate. I expected it wasn't big enough or tall enough to hold ink, but in truth I do love the look of a nice bottle and decided to keep these on show.

Once the box was purchased I fashioned solid dividers from some hardwood in the configuration I wanted. After gluing these to the base securely, I decided to go with some green felt to line the bottom. I can't say it's the most professional job I have done but it does the job well, and at a total cost of around $45 for the whole project. I have a Pelikan on the way I can't wait to add and think this will keep me happy for some time to come. The only addition I was thinking was to add something for display purposes to the inside of the lid.

Some pics of the final result.

Looks like a nice box to bring around everywhere.

How much would it cost if I were to commission one? :P

Great work there! Lovely little thing :D

A sincere man am I
From the land where palm trees grow,
And I want before I die
My soul's verses to bestow.

All those moments will be lost in time.
Like tears in rain.
Time to die.

A nice style and shape of box. The middle wood panel has a very interesting grain/burl.

An antique map of Australia, Nouvelle Hollande or Terra Australis would look nice on the inside of the lid. :)

Thanks everyone. Map sounds like a great idea.

Nice work now whenever you see a box you will be thinking "I wonder how many pens will fit in there".

Yes, this is exactly what is happening to me. It's a sickness I'm sure...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
