Sunday Fleabay Picks For July 13, 2014

You might could call this a Sunday Conway Stewart Sunday (for you CS fans) hey, it's not anything I

can plan, it's just the way the listings fall.

Disclaimer; I am not a pen expert. I know just enough to make me dangerous. These are listings *I* find interesting or potential deals I think May happen. I do Look Closely at the Same pics and listing descriptions You can see before I include them on the list. I would not Knowingly put a pen on the list with serious damage or damage not noted by the seller. Generally, not at all knowingly. If you feel I missed some damage to a pen Please post what you think you see here and I'll gladly go back, look it over again and make any necessary edits to the list.

If you yourself find a Sunday listing and notice it's Not on the list here and wonder Why, feel free to ask me either in a post or backchannel if you wish.

If during the weekdays Between Sunday Fleabay Pick listings, you find an item on Ebay that you wish to attempt to keep "under the radar" and wish to have Excluded from possibly being Included on the Sunday's Pick list, please forward it to me via PM and I'll Gladly keep it OFF the list for you.

So of course, the same usual Fleabay Caveat Emptor applies here. At the very least you're looking at listings that 4 more eyes from someone who isn't a complete pen idiot has looked pretty closely at first.

For a good portion of the list, you may very well have enough time to dash a quick question or two off to a seller and maybe get an answer back prior to it closing if need be. It wouldn't hurt to try.

As always, it's Really Nice to hear back here if you are able to get something from this list.

Good Luck!

You might also go here and check out our own Thomas Bickman's pens (TBickiii on Fleabay who's

pens all close between 8-9 PM Sunday night. You can't go wrong with one of his fully restored pens.

I have been watching #55 since it was first listed. The price has quickly exceeded anything I could afford. And the fact that the seller has kept it as a 'private listing' raises my hackles. Is there really a need to hide an already coded identity?

Well, not really, but ANY Known information is Some good.

Let's say I'm loading in my one shot bid and I can see that everyone who is bidding so far has 1-10 Ebay feedbacks (nOObs) that Might make me feel a little "safer" than say if all the bidders have 1000+ feedbacks. But the short Answer to your question is Not Much... (Especially now that there is no way for you to message even the usual scrambled ID's for a member if you wanted to for some reason.)

At least one of your listings was for something I was already watching. But some others have now been added to my watch list even though I really can't afford to be spending a lot of spare cash at the moment. Between the school taxes (you do NOT want to be in my school district :o) being about to go on vacation, saving up for DCSS (I've already had to allow for the hotel room and the 3 bottles of Akkerman inks) and not knowing how much my husband spent up at his mom's (gas for the trip, groceries, lumber to repair the wheelchair ramp to the front door, etc), I'm hesitant to dip further into discretionary funds. But boy-o, some of those listings are REALLY tempting....

And of course some of them are already gone, because I'm just seeing the listings now (about 10:20 EDT), unlike last week when I actually stayed up late enough Saturday night to get a jump on that week's post.

Oh, and I see that #3 had no takers.... B) Maybe it will get relisted at a more reasonable price -- I can sort of see military historians being interested in it for the novelty value, but not really much otherwise.

Hey, Cryptos, One more note.

FWIW, when *I* see the hidden ID's, I'll admit I mutter under my breath too. In the same vein that I don't think it really Helps us the bidders to see the ID's, I also Don't See where Anyone is ADvantaged by them Not being there either. It bugs me More that the information that is Normally available Isn't in this case but Most of all that that action seems unnecessary to me.

Hi Bruce. Thanks for this. I know I shouldn't be looking  B)

Crissy, There's not a thing in the world wrong with window shopping.

It can actually be pretty educational even if you have Zero intent to bid on anything.

Bruce in Ocala, Fl-You just have to keep that finger OFF the snipe trigger... ;)

I got no. 7, which just looked so interesting. I really shouldn't have as I'm watching something else (not on the list) likely to get very high, plus I scored what I pretty sure is a PFM for $200 yesterday. But...intriguing! Thanks, Bruce.

WOW! Mardi, I see you got that Condor thing. I sure hope it's as neat in person. Sure would like to see a review of it, I'll bet you'll be the first.

Ah well, I got out bid on #60 the boxed Morrison Set. Not too familiar with the company but I like flat tops regardless of their brands

Thanks for the Sunday list as always.

#100 is a lovely P51 and I'm typically not a fan of GF caps for them. Glhf if anyone is watching it.

I just picked up my first Sailor. (Insert inappropriate joke here.) I won #88. Thanks for posting these each week; quite a few of them I wouldn't notice otherwise.

#22, the S. T. Dupont Chairman, got a lot of nice action. I didn't bid on it knowing that it would go for way more than I wanted to spend, and it did indeed.

#17, the 9K Sheaffer Imperial Touchdown Masterpiece, went for way too much. More than I paid for my 18K version of the same pen.

I settled for #84, the 48-pen leather case. Just what I had been shopping for. Thanks for the list, Bruce, I probably would not have found this without your help!

I am Very happy to hear when our members are scoring pens they want, thanks for letting me know. It makes the effort more worthwhile.

Bill, I have two 12 pen and 1 24 pen case from Bill Kiffin. I've had them for 4-5 years now and have been happy with them. (I bought the 3 cases over about a 3 year timeframe.) As the price dictates, I think they are Chromium tanned leather But there is also fabric between the leather and pens. Most of the other cases I've seen either have skinny elastic loops or worse yet, just one wide one. Bill's cases are the only ones I've found that aren't the uber expenisve vegitable tanned cases that have two nice wide elastics per pen. IF I noticed any tarnishing on gold trim, it was minimal and didn't last very long after filling the cases. He lives in Canada but drives across the border to mail to U.S customers so they can have lower postage rates.

Bill has started to sell some of his personal pens on Ebay. Until recently, most were BIN with IMO slightly high prices. Until today. His NOS SE Pel 320 only went for $160 shipped. I feel good for Any of us that get a good deal but I am pretty sure that is much less than he paid for it. Sigh.

I hope you like your case Bill.

[EDIT] Good one Janelle!

I picked up #85 to feed my appetite for desk pens. Also, I ran across this Esterbrook today which I think ended up being a pretty good deal. Don't know about "NIB", but it looks good to me.

Thanks again for doing what you do.

Drew, I dunno, that Dollar pen looks remarkably unscratched for over 70 years old. Not only is the nib NOS appearing but the script on it indicates

an earlier renew point, very likely around the time the pen was new.

I would usually agree with you that the odds would be against a NOS Dollar pen, but I see nothing there, even zoomed in, that Cleary says otherwise.

I paid the same as you did a few years ago for mine just like that but mine was restored by a member here to Be Made to look that nice.

And I REALLY like that desk set, I sure thought I remember them coming with a 51 but hey, even with a 21, the price was right.

63. Estie J Green 2556 Section is already1/2 out for your 1st resac 432PM

Plenty of time to ask about jewels and ask seller to not screw cap tight

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Esterbrook-Lever-Fountain-Pen-Green-Pearlized-Color-Excellent-Condition-/201123540534

I actually bid on this pen yesterday and was a bit surprised to win with the opening bid.

What am I missing that I am not seeing? New to older fountain pens, and will be first esterbrook. What jewels?

Assuming may not need sac already?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
