Unknown Pen

I wonder if anyone knows what make this pen is. It's octagonal and about 4.5" closed. The nib is very flexible and smooth. It says "Platinum & 14KT." There is a line across the nib as if it had a platinum mask at one time.

I am no vintage expert, but Platinum is a Japanese brand.

You might try your luck there....

Could be a Platinum pen, or a Frankenpen with a Platinum nib transplant.

No other (faint) lettering on the barrel?

Nothing else on the barrel, and the writing on the nib says "Platinum & 14 KT," which makes me think platinum refers to the metal in the nib, not a manufacturer.

I very much doubt it would have a platinum nib. Platinum is a metal that is very difficult to work with. When we were married I thought about platinum rings after my own design but the jeweller (well known) could not make them to order, just prefab ones from a factory.

Besides platinum is much more expensive than gold.

If the nib says Platinum & 14kt, your chances are 99% it is a Platinum (brand, not metal) pen.

My take on it is that the platinum was a plated "mask" similar to those found on so many Sheaffers from the mid twentieth century.

Platinum is not graded in carats, so it can't be made from platinum. It could be plated , though the color of the nib seems wrong. Is there any sign of plating that flaked off?

I see why you think it means platinum and gold. I won't say it doesn't, but also think of translating Japanese to English to sell to a foreign market. I don't recognize the pen, but I've seen enough grammatical errors to think RMN is on to something. If it was plated there should be signs of that still on the nib, after all the imprint is very clear. As it says 14KT, that would be more American market as Europe uses a "c" in carat and 585 would be there too, IIRC.

Good looking regardless.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
