Sheaffer Targa Slim - Help? Converter And Cartridge Alternatives

Looking for some assistance...I have been researching on FPN and on the internet for a solution to my problem..

 

Problem: Just obtained a Targa Slim...no converter, no cartridges

 

Can't find any of the original slim converters, and can't find any of the original Slim II cartridges

 

What converter will work and what cartridges will work ?

 

Some have said the Monteverde Mini converter will work..

 

Some have said the Waterman LONG cartridges will work.

Some have said the Waterman Lady/mini cartridges will work.

 

Can someone who has had this issue tell me what your solution(s) were ?

In the linked page it doesn't specifically state the converter will not fit slim Targa. I would email for clarification.

 

I have a couple of slim Targas, and I think I will try one of these converters I already have in another pen. I still have one good slim converter, and I have been trying to figure out if I can resac it. The Waterman cartridges will probably fit, and I have a lot of them to try.

That converter does not work. The Waterman long cartridges do not fit, because they are wider at the back and won't go more than halfway down the barrel.

Has anyone resacced one of the slim converters? When mine fails I might try it. What is there to lose at that point?

 

I have ordered two od the Kaweco converters. Figuring I'll probably ruin one of them.

The Kaweco converters came today. They fit the section on the slim Targa. The most I could get into them was about half a sac. The slim Targa section screwed into the barrel and kept going past the clutch ring, on down, cap wouldn't hold. Unscrewed the section so the cap could grab the clutch ring, and the cap was on loosely, because the cap and section easily unscrewed from the barrel. Apparently the length of the slim Targa converter stops against something in the barrel or the end of the barrel, preventing the section from screwing down so far that the clutch ring disappears. Not a solution.

 

I suspect that unless you can fit two short cartridges into the barrel, you will have the same result with slim cartridges.

 

My slim Targa has had nib creep to beat the band. On Sheaffer's blue black. On any ink. It's pretty, but I am not going to write with it again. It is a major nuissance.

If the section screws in too far, there's something wrong with either the section or the barrel. A properly working Slim Targa will not act the way you described. A section with no converter or cartridge installed will still stop at the correct place so that the cap will properly engage the clutch ring, as will a section with either a converter or a cartridge. I can't be sure without seeing the pen, but I suspect that the barrel insert with the threads has been pressed too far into the barrel. The threads should be flush with the end of the barrel. It seems to me that the right solution is to get the pen repaired.

 

I tried short cartridges in one of mine, but found that the back end was too large to fit into the barrel. I couldn't even get one in.

I bought my chrome slim Targa in the late 1970s for around $20. The section unit has issues also where it blurbs ink. I think it has done its duty. Sometimes I keep these pens with issues around for the looks and memories connected with them. This pen has been trouble, though. The first section swelled up and I couldn't get the cap off with any amount of cooling, freezing or heating. The only thing saved was the barrel. I found a new cap and two replacement sections. I might try the other section. Sometimes I throw pens like this away to avoid the never-ending repair job.

I have a mini-converter in mine. I believe it was made by Monteverde. It is a slide converter. Capacity is miniscule but it fits and functions.

Best of luck to you guys, really. If I buy another Targa, though, it will be the bigger one.
