Is This Red Sj An Icicle?

Saw this on "that" site and took a stab at it assuming it is, number 151342203626. My cut and paste skills are poor, if someone could link it I'd appreciate it.

So, a waste of money, or another vein of Esty madness?

This one? Yes it's a red Icicle. They are pretty pens but the plastic is a bit more fragile. I suspect that is part of the reason they are less common. The Gregg nib on it looks to have seen better days as well.

BTW, if your happy with it, how could it possibly be a waste? I have a similar icicle, but in an orangeish hue, like a weird cross between red and brown (or bronze). I think that is about what I paid for mine.

Paul, yes it's a 'Cicle but it's an LJ not a SJ. Nib or not, that's a good price especially resacced.

I'm not sure I'd go so far as say it's a more fragile plastic. UNLESS it's the final rendition 'cicle we've discussed recently (and that isn't). I will agree the plastic Looks different and it's kind of translucency may make it Appear less durable but you don't see the shrinkage in them you do with the final version or the preponderance of cap edge cracks like on the pastels.

Bruce, thanks for getting back to me. Did I just open a vortex to the darker side of Esterbrook? I promise, I just needed a good pen.

I remember saying "Heck, even an Estiebook would do." (bleep), they almost give them away, maybe one of each color, only two or three. How many? Oh my! Sizes? Three sizes for each color too? (bleep). Can I just have my boss send you my check.

And all this before the talk turned around to nibs.

I hold all of you responsible for the ink in my veins and the zero's in my bank account.

Aww,

Come on Paul, all of us?? And we all have a little ink in our veins!! All zeroes?? Now, take a deep breath and relax. There that is better. Just buy the nibs one or two here and there. It doesn't hurt so bad, now, that's a good boy.

The reason I'm perusing the Esterbrook Forum, is that I'm thinking of going Estie-vintage.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
