A while ago I bought a bottle of Ostrich 901 Green ink from China out of curiosity (well it cost only 72 cents), and it turned out to be such a boring colour, I don't see myself using it much. So I looked at some colour wheels and decided to add some complementary colour to it. I picked a red-violet called "Penbbs 絳紫" (made/commissioned by a moderator on the Chinese fountain pen forum) as it is an ink that shows some shading. A closer complementary colour would have been Diamine Claret but I thought I should do a test run with something similar first. I used a ratio of 5 green to 1 red-violet, and the resulting colour is sort of a seaweed green. The properties are similar to the Ostrich Green - good flow, some feathering and bleedthrough on cheaper papers - but with added shading.

It shades a bit - not as wild as Apache Sunset but much better than the original.

I have a bottle of Noodler's Antietam Red and hate the color. What would you suggest mixing with it?

Nice; both colour and penmanship. Like the Penbbs Crimson Purple too. I've been moved to do this myself with a couple of inks - also sticking within a certain brand. It's a lot of fun and briefly stems the urge to buy more ink!

What aspects of the colour do you not like? If you want to brighten it, maybe mix it with some bright red or bright orange? To make it darker, add a little bit of blue-green ink to it. I have found these charts useful.

Thank you. It is definitely fun and makes me feel less guilty because I am not buying new ink! But now I want to get some pure CMYK colours to play with.

Funny, I just mixed a small batch of Sheaffer red-black ink.

Still not happy with the color, I think it needs more black.

great penmanship :thumbup: . what i have done in the past with my green ink is to mix with blue, when i found i dislike looking at green writing. it gives a real nice teal shade. depending on the darkness of the blue ink, and how much blue you add to the green, you can get various teal shades. highly recommended.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..
