New Jin Hao Pen

One of my colleagues has been teaching in Hong Kong for the past six months. He returned to the U.S. over the weekend. His gift to me was this very fancy Jin Hao pen, in a presentation box. It is red, with a very shiny gold overlay. The pen is quite hefty, QUITE hefty. The cap will post (it screws on the back), which you would think would make the pen unwieldy. In this case, however, the extra weight makes the pen crop into the curve of the hand in writing position and stay there.

I cleaned it last night, and inked it this morning (Iroshizuku fuyu gaki/winter persimmon). It wrote perfectly, and appears to be a wet medium nib. I haven't tested it enough yet to be sure.

It is not something I would normally choose, and it definitely isn't an everyday carry pen, but it will be quite the looker sitting on my desk! [On a previous trip my colleague was gifted with a FP and a tie from a Pakistani university; I have that pen, too!]

Oh Sharon, congratulations on a stunning pen. I have the same in the Black and gold and as you say it is a showstopper. Please would you post a writing sample with this pen and the ink - I haven't inked mine up yet (2 years on) because I have 80 plus inked up and in regular use! I am waiting for a friend to (hopefully) bring back some Noodler's inks for me and some Iroshizuku inks coming from Japan - then perhaps I shall ink this beast of a pen up.

Very nice! thanks for sharing.

The other pen, is it made in Pakistan?

I am not sure where the other one was made. I know it is from the University because their name is printed on it, but I have no idea where the pen originated.

Nice :)

On the one hand, it looks like a beautiful pen. On the other hand, it also looks uncomfortable to write with, and I would never write with such a flashy pen in public.

Use it as a display piece :)

I'm trying to get you a photo, but everything taken with my iPhone is too big to post. I'll try again with the iPad shortly.

FloatingFountain, I agree that it is not a pen I will carry to the local coffee shop for a letter writing session, but I do carry some eye catching pens most of the time (very colorful pens, or inks, or both). This one is too much for me, too.

Maksim, I think it will make a nice weapon if anyone insults me, or it.

Bhavna, I think I can load a photo now:

I have a running joke with one of my students regarding that Chaos; when he hits the lottery he has vowed to buy that pen for himself, two classmates, and me (his peers would very much prefer the MB Grace Kelly, actually). I haven't shown him my more reasonable substitute yet!

Thank you Sharon, lovely handwriting. I may well be tempted to ink mine up now!

May as well join the party, Bhavna! I took mine for a (liberal) ride last weekend to show it to a pen friend. He was surprised at its writing ability out of the box, and at its heft, of course. My husband, who is not a pen person (he is a pencil guy), really thought the pen was an ornate joke, intended to be decorative but not a writer. He was quite surprised to learn that these pens are, in fact, writers and not just desk decorations.

Congratulations all around: striking pen, great conversation piece, and a really good writing instrument.

Even if the finish wears with use, it will only add character.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
