Inky T O D - The Perfect Ink Bottle For An Exclusive Ink.

I really like the hexagon idea. The Montegrappa inks come in one like that and it's a very attractive bottle.

I actually put some thought into this. The nice bottles are made with lots of glass. I borrowed a few samples from the Goulets. By the way, that link takes you to a page that shows many different bottles, including ones I didn't pick out.

Caran d'Ache: unique shape, lots of glass

Montegrappa: unique shape, lots of glass, minimalistic labels, great caps!

Omas: unique shape, lots of glass

http://www.gouletpens.com/v/vspfiles/photos/categories/1002-T.jpg

Pelikan Edelstein: lots of glass, and I like that the label is printed on the glass (I don't know the name for the process)

http://www.gouletpens.com/v/vspfiles/photos/categories/860-T.jpg

Pilot Iroshizuku: lots of glass, cute little scarf, minimalistic label, and a design that makes it easier to get that last bit of ink.

http://www.gouletpens.com/v/vspfiles/photos/categories/945-T.jpg

So, what I'm trying to say is that a nice bottle will have lots of visible glass. It should have a special shape. Faceted designs bring associations with crystals and diamonds, but so does a lot of glass. A nice cap is important, and I think the label should be classy and subtle. Finally, the bottle should be well designed to make filling easy, even when it gets empty: think the TWSBI bottles and the Pilot 70mL bottles. Naturally, the design should not be like another brand. However, to be realistic, specialized bottles are expensive. It would be better to do as Noodler's does and use a cheap, existing bottle.

As for the ink, it should really be the star. Unless the goal is to get a line of ink, I would focus on a color that's not black. It should be well shaded, have lubrication, and have some kind of a rich color.

Something like the Rohrer & Klingner bottles. They are simple and easy to fill from. I prefer bottles that are higher than they are wide. Not the best looking bottle though.

Edited to add:

But it should be made of clear glass and not coloured.

Any of the Foresta ink bottles would work.

The bottles used for the Sailor Bungu Box, Kingdom Note, Ishida Bungu and Maruzen Athena inks is simple and practical. The inverted contical shape should make it fairly easy to fill when the ink level runs low, and the wide base prevents tipping.

If you can get Gimbron/Akkerman style bottles, that'd be great too.

One of the best bottles out there-the Levenger bottle. (or something similar)

I'd love to find the long neck bottles. Or COD bottles.

BTW great link.

Reality check.

Maybe this 55ml hexagon bottle will fit the bill. I found it online for .49 USD if you buy more than 120 bottles.

I recently bought a couple of bottles to decant from (in my view) unusable retail bottles. I considered this particular bottle but in the end decided against it because of the lid. It is a thin metal lid for a jam jar. In the end i got the one below. Not very pretty but 50 ml, a 28 mm opening and a good lid. 1,30€ each if you buy just a few, probably less if you buy larger lots.

The Montegrappa bottle could be the one mentioned earlier by Foresta?

I have purchased from Bottle Solutions (http://www.bottlesolutions.com/ ) and like their approach, you can pick a jar and then a matching lid (some of their lids fit old Sheaffer ink bottles which is how I found them), the prices are reasonable and they seem to have good quality work. On a side note - I wouldn't be interested in an FPN exclusive ink really (and I don't think I'm alone in that - how long did the last batch hang around?) I buy ink from established stores (or super cheap on eBay) and don't really have a reason to buy an FPN ink (I donate when I want to send FPN some money).

Several inks brands use bottles which alot like some of the Foresta bottles:

  • Montegrappa
  • De Atramentis (both the new bottles and old triangular ones)
  • J. Herbin
  • Diamine
  • Montblanc limited edition inks

Yeah, when I looked at it again, it doesn't appear very deep.

Just a reality check...

I really buy the ink for the ink.. (I do have the odd $$ ink because of the fancy bottle).. If it keeps the cost to a minimum... then it can come in a plastic bag for all I care. (Ex. Toucan... awesome ink, awesome prices...)

We all want amazing ink at the lowest cost possible, show me the ink dude that wants to pay as much as possible for ink..

Shipping glass is expensive. If people don't really want the baggies Toucan uses (BTW .. I think they are genius!!!) then lets keep it real and choose an affordable bottle.

A custom bottle is only worth it if the intention is to sell thousands of ink bottles..... If that is the game plan, then lets go for the italian glass... with bakelite caps.

My 0.02 cents.... ;)

Totally agree with this. I love fancy bottles as much as the next girl, but they would be prohibitively expensive for this.

Go with the cheapest option to be able to get the cost of the ink as low as possible and be able to include as many people as possible in the buy.

Toucan bags are fantastic. Everyone has a jar or bottle around his/her house. I poured one of mine into a recently-emptied spice jar.

The Parker Penman bottles are still being made in China, now in oval rather than circular shape. Picaso ink is sold in them.

However, you do need to remember that when inverting to fill the little inkwell in the neck, put the lid on first.

However, what capacity bottles are needed? And how many? And if one is going to go for truly unique bottles (i.e. totally different design from anything else on the market) then you are looking at a special design and manufacturing run. How much do you want to pay for some glass to wrap around the ink?

I would not like the TWSBI bottles because they cost more than the ink you put in them.

How about these bottles?

They come in 50 and 100 mls, cost less than $4 or $5, are brown (doesn't show the ink well, but does protect from UV) and have eyedroppers (a la 125 ml Noodler's bottles).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
