Sorry for the messed up formatting. FPN keep locking me out and I had a heck of a time even getting the listing posted. Sorry the 2nd set is such a mess.

Thanks Bruce, a great set of listings as ever

At a guess I reckon the Duofold at 79 is probably an original barrel, but a replacement cap. I understand the mandarin caps are very difficult to repair. A nice pen even if I am right.

I get so sad when I see an Estie J for $9.99 and then look down and see shipping is $6.00. Sellers, don't do this.

Huh. That NOS Imperial and the Dolphin were being sold by the same seller. Sadly, he/she mixed up the caps on the pens (the black "Sheaffer's" cap belongs on the Dolphin and the Lifetime chrome/gold cap belongs on the Imperial). Too bad -- with any luck, the same person bought both and can correct the mistake. Both were nice pens and sold for a good price.

The absolute cheapest way you can safely send a pen is around $2.50, add another $1.00 at least if it goes in a box.

I'm not going to get all excited, certainly not enough to not bid over $2-3 for the time and effort to pack it and get to the PO. (And no, I don't think the majority of small volume sellers do the postage on line and have the item picked up. I sure don't. )

Even with that shipping, it went for a whole $21 shipped with only 2 bidders. If you didn't bid on it over $2-3, it sounds like you lost out over not much money...

The Parker Duovac went for $88+ I expected around $70 but there was a 5 sec snipe war going on at the end. Ehhh, I might have to stop hitting up eBay if prices are going to be crazy for FPs.

Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow

I realise that this may well be a naif question but... Bruce, do you include listings that you are going to bid on yourself? Or is that a separate secret list?

I think we shouldn't look at as dollars but rather as percentages. I read in a previous thread that you weren't happy that EBay/PayPal took 14% of your cut when you sold something recently. Well paying $2-3 more on a $9.99 pen is like adding 20-30% while on a $99.99 pen it is only 2-3% and yes it is water under the bridge.

IMO you are trying to compare apples to oranges.

At Least 50% of the $6 shipping fee you have an issue with is a Fixed Cost the seller has no control over. He is simply trying to recoup that Cost To Him from you. Again, in this instance, you are balking over $2-3 for the sellers time and effort to prepare the item for shipping and get it to the shipper. I doubt very seriously that YOU work for free, I'm not understanding why you expect a pen seller to work for free.

The same Can't be said for the meager amount it "cost" Fleabay/Paypal to host my little listing for 7 days. I would argue the actual Fixed Cost to Ebay/Paypal for my transaction was minuscule, resulting in nearly a 100% profit to Ebay. USPS would have NONE of the money issues they have now if their profit margin was nearly 100%.

There are Other places I can go sell my item with ZERO fees added. There are NO places where you can have your items shipped for free.

Sorry, but whether you agree or not, you are in a small minority if $5-6 shipping on a pen is going to result in you not being interested in it. (I will grant you that I come closer to your side once a pen's shipping hits $7.50-10.00, but that's not the case here.)

I know you hate to admit you are wrong (I have read plenty of your posts) but the 14% of EBay (more like 10% EBay and 4% Paypal) is cheap in comparison to what you are getting. EBay provides you exposure you couldn't buy for $1000 or even $10,000. Everyone and their mom knows about EBay and that means you are exposed to that many more buyers. Paypal deserves a cut as well as they are providing you a slick way to move money without having to take a check and waiting for it to clear.

I sell on EBay and I know the cost of shipping. If I'm selling a $10 pen, I don't think it is right to ship at $5.80. Yes it is only a few dollars more than the $2.08 it costs to ship a first class envelope but if you look at percentages, it is a lot more.

I have not the slightest issue admitting I'm wrong when that happens. I also pretty thoroughly think my positons through Before I hit the post button.

I'm done with this discussion.

Well, I received the set yesterday and both pieces are in great condition, and as a bonus, the pen has a functioning sac! First time that has happened for me with a purchase on the Bay! I am carrying the pen today as a matter of fact. Puts down a nice wet medium line.

It's also the birth anniversary of Lt. Gen. Louis "Chesty" Puller, USMC, so carrying a WWII military clip pen is especially appropriate today.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
