Sunday Fleabay Picks For June 15, 2014

Recommended Posts

Well, this Sunday starts out pretty slow, you can tell that from it taking me 2.5 hrs

of listings to find the 1st item. Thankfully things picked up before the end of the

day. 900 listings later I have these 76 for you to check out.

Disclaimer; I am not a pen expert. I know just enough to make me
dangerous. These listings are pens *I* find interesting or a potential
deal I think May happen. I DO look Closely at the Same pics and
descriptions You can see Before I include them on the list. I would
not knowingly put a pen on the list with serious damage without noting
it or it being noted by the seller. Generally, not at all, knowingly.
If you think I missed some damage to a pen, please feel free to post
it here. As quickly as I can I'll go back, look it over again and make
any necessary edits to the list.

So of course, the same usual Fleabay Caveat Emptor applies here. At
the very least you're looking at listings that 4 more eyes from
someone who isn't a complete pen idiot has looked pretty closely at
first.

For a good portion of the list, you may very well have enough time to
dash a quick question or two off to a seller and maybe get an answer
back prior to it closing if need be. It wouldn't hurt to try.

As always, it's Really Nice to hear back here if you are able to get
something from this list.

Good Luck!

I'm interested to see what other "8000" fountain pens the seller of the exploding trick pen might be. I'm going to follow that seller. :)

On the Brown J #53, I'd already asked about the jewels and seller says they are intact. I asked also about cracks on the pens and seller said "yes there are cracks or scratches", but I don't see any cracks in the photo, just what looks like usual wear.

Excellent selection once again, Bruce! Will make for some fun Father's Day bidding.

I found the overall pickins to be slimmer today.

There were other Targas closing today. Most of those sellers had delusions of grandeur with their starting prices. It seemed A LOT of pens were overpriced this go around IMO, that's why they aren't on the list.

There's actually another Chrome one with some bids that I left off the list. Speerbob's is nicer, for less money and is sitting there all lost and forlorn.

Hi Bruce, Why are you asking for a measurement on the two 51's #73 and #74. Could they be a knock off? Does that designate a demi from a standard? Does the length tell whether it's a vacumatic or aerometric?

Thanks,

Larry

I'm interested in the Conway Stewart but the prices from completed listings vary from $30 (unrestored) to $90. I guess I will keep looking then.

On the twin 51 listings. BrianC unless you have info back from the seller, IMO, the listings were too unclear to know for sure. There's no pic of the fillers and it's easy to fudge up the cap to barrel proportions with a poor pic. Which would be why I suggested someone ask if interested. We are only talking a 3/8" difference. The description is exactly the same for each pen. The seller is a high volume one who likely doesn't have any idea what he has. He says, "approximately 5" long". Trust me, 3/8" is approximate Enough for a lot of Fleabay sellers. While of course it's Possible, if any seller had 2 51's, it would be statistically unlikely that Both of them would be Demis.
Csrae, there IS a CS sub forum here on FPN. Those folk should be able to give you some pricing guidelines.
Mardi, let us know how you like it, it looked pretty neat to me.

Yeah, it does, Bruce. I hope it is as pudgy as it looked. Cute pen.

Did you get my message about the. Mabie Todd dip pen?

And in other news...I got a Parker 51 in working order with an oblique stub nib. Not cheap (about $105.) I hope it turns out to be OK.

I guess it's worth a shot and hopefully someone will have a est. for price ranges before the auction ends. Eh, I have tried price check posts but they've never been that useful.

I'm curious about the P51 with the oblique stub, I own other oblique nibs but never heard about it on a P51.

I think these listings only help the seller: the more pen collectors do the bidding the higher the selling price. I am a buyer, not a seller, so I am not too enthusiastic about these postings. Still, most people seem to like them!

Hmm--- here's a photo of a oblique stub nib. From the listing it looks more like a Broad nib but it could be different in person. Nevertheless, I consider it a good deal for $105 for a restored gold cap P51. Also, I have purchased from the seller before and they ship fast.

I don't think it is a plain broad because it is much less rounded. It might not be oblique...I am a noob at stubs, and at least it is completely different from my fine point 51, which is a win. Thanks for the link to the site, which is new to me.

You're welcome. Some times I wish all sellers would add writing samples to their auctions. I know it's not always 100% accurate but at least I'd get a better sense of the linewidth and if it actually writes.

Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow

I was fortunate enough to win the Pelikan m805; an 800/805 has been on my wishlist for a while, so getting a clean used pen is very gratifying. Last week's wins included a Pilot Prera and two Esterbrook J's, so my nascent collection is expanding rapidly. (maybe I should have heeded all those postings describing FPN members as enablers, but where is the fun in that?)

These weekly listings are a nice resource, and I really appreciate the time they must take. Thank you, Bruce.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
