Meetup didn't provide any meet-ups. I haven't heard of anything local around here; I think the only place that sold fountain pens outside of big-box stores closed a while ago (unless you count the odd MB boutique).

There are certainly some fine folks from SD - I met them last year at the LAPS - and I'd expect that they'd be nothing less than stellar company !

If you know any PJohnP, I'd very much appreciate you letting them know about this thread. It would be great if we could organize a small meet up. If enough people come and are interested, perhaps I could be convinced to bring my ink journals with all my reviews! :P

Hey Saskia,

A friend (PJohnP) tipped me off to this, and I'm a local. There is a small group that meets at Ron Meloche's place, but it is pretty far from downtown (where ComiCon is), and always falls on the 2nd Saturday of the month. I just checked and CC is going on later in the month, so that won't work.

I'd be happy to send out some notices and maybe have a meetup sometime during that time, but... uh... I work with the Symphony, and the Pops concerts during the summer are right on the bay behind the Convention Center, and we usually do programs to coincide. This year is, if you'll pardon the phrase, a real ball-buster, with the three nights in a row being:

  • Video Games Live!
  • Danny Elfman's Music from the films of Tim Burton
  • Star Trek (2009) screening with the soundtrack played live by the orchestra

If any of that interests you, you can find more info here.I can't tell you how much work this is going to be, especially for us in the percussion section. As such, I may not have a lot of free time, but will know further down the road. PM me and let's maybe do some email contact to see what might work out. It would be great to meet you, and I'm certain it can at least be that!

Pens or no pens, I'm envious that you got into SD Comic-Con...that's not easy considering the amount of interest grows every year.

The last place to get fountain pens tat I know of in San Diego was hillcrest stationers. They have been closed for about I think 5 years now. There might be a shop in La Jolla I don't know about but as for groups for pens not one I have found.

Indeed, Warwick's in La Jolla still has a counter with quite a nice selection of fountain pens, though they definitely - as befits La Jolla - skew towards the high-end pens. Nice people, lovely store. Anyone can PM me if they want for info on the pen gatherings that take place in Lakeside once a month. If I ever free up some free time, I'll post a notice here and try to have a get-together somewhat more central one day.

I think she means Thursday, July 24. And I just got the official hire for all the services that week (during Comic-Con) and that night is "Video Games Live", with a 7:30 start. I'll keep tabs on this space and see if it works out for me to stop by on my way in to work. Our concerts are directly behind the convention center, right next to the bay.

Comic-con has a shuttle between your hotel and the Convention Center, which is in the Gaslamp Quarter. Don't waste money on a cab if you are going downtown, the shuttle is free and runs Wednesday 3:00p - midnight and then starting Thursday at 4:40am it runs 24 hrs until Sunday at 7:00p.

I just got home from rehearsal and was going to pop in here, and saw a new post already: this week is looking beyond brutal for me. On top of the hard rehearsal/performance schedule, I am also now in the middle of the process of moving my mother into assisted living care. I'm probably going to be not much able to have fun this week :( but I'll keep my eyes out here in case there are any ad-hoc meetups and I happen to be around. Sorry to be such a bad host, but it has fallen this way.

I think I'm good for Thursday night; just let me know when I need to be available. If you can let me know as early as reasonable, I can ask to work an earlier shift at work.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
