How Do I Stop Getting Adverts?

Recommended Posts

I hit subscribe on the classifieds a week or two ago, and received advert notices in my e-mail. I then hit unsubscribe, but still received the notices in my e-mail. I figured the system might take a while to cycle, although I began receiving them immediately. I waited a few days, still getting them. I went back, thinking maybe it's reversed and the "Subscribe" button is telling me that I'm subscribed, and clicked it again. Still getting them, and clicked "Unsubscribe," again. It's been a couple of days, and they're still coming.

Am I just not waiting long enough (the most I've waited is about three days), or is the system just not working. Please help me to stop receiving adverts.

You have had cookies/spyware dropped on you. The subscription may have allowed the gateway into your computer so unsubscribing won't do any good as your are already hit. I use a free malware called SuperAntiSpyware. It helps clean those cookies up. Other programs which are free that are helpful are Glary Utilities and CCCleaner. Good luck.

I have just the opposite problem: I subscribed but receive no notices at all... :gaah:

So, FPN isn't a secured site, or are you saying that FPN, itself, is using cookies?

I may have been somewhat premature in my assumption on this. Anyway cookies are primarily used to identify you when you return to a site and are not in themselves harmful. FPN is a very secure site in my experience however anyone who assumes ANY site is completely secure is dreaming. Your e-mail address could have been "scraped" from anywhere and totally unconnected with FPN. BTW unsubscribing can take even a couple of weeks sometimes, which is likely the problem. A question for you is are these ads your are referring to those directly from FPN only or from outside sources?

Once or twice a week I review the cookies in my browser file. I delete all the ones I do not specifically recognize. The regular one will return when I click on something so I don't have any problems about that.

One note to keep in mind is, if you ever go to a site that limits your access to the information there - you can view 5 articles and then you have pay a fee/subscribe - simply go into your "cookie file" and delete any and all cookies even remotely related to the site. When you return to the site, the absence of identifying cookie makes you look like a new visitor and resets the usage counter.

I'm getting normal notices of people selling things in the FPN classifieds, even though I unsubscribed four days ago now - the most recent time. I'm not getting anything from third party vendors.

Then everything should be ok. Have patience and your unsubscribing request should happen in the near future. Brgmarketing's advice is very good though. Use of the programs I mentioned will accomplish the same thing. It is a good maintenance idea for your PC which will avoid long term problems particularly with how much adware/malware/spyware there is all over the net these days.

Just deleting browser cookies may not be enough. Now the scum-bags are storing cookies in your Flash plugin (do a Web Search for "Flash Cookies" to learn more). You can browse/control/delete these Flash cookies in via the "Manage Flash Player Settings" option which is accessible through Control Panel (or whatever Micro$oft calls it these days). A better option is to use browser plug-ins to control scripting and cookies in the first place. For-example, the Firefox browser with the NoScript and BetterPrivacy plug-ins. The best option is to not use Adobe/Macromedia Flash in the first place - something that may actually be doable some day if the likes of HTML5 is ever widely adopted.

Okay. It's been well over two weeks since I clicked on the button to stop receiving classified adverts and I'm still receiving them. I really don't see how it's a third party cookie, since I'm not getting spammed by anything other than FPN adverts. Even so, I deleted all cookies except for those I selected. Is there someone I could contact? I'm about ready to add them to my spam list. I haven't looked at it that closely. I'm not sure if that would send all notifications and correspondence from FPN to my spam folder or not.

Can someone tell me if anyone else is having this problem? I'm being spammed by FPN Classifieds. I pressed "Unsubscribe" a month ago. Finally, I had to mark them as spam in my e-mail because I was getting inundated. However, marking them as spam is sending messages about any threads that I'm following to spam as well. Just to clarify - I've cleaned out all unwanted cookies, and I'm not receiving any more than the usual spam from any other source. In other words, there has not been an uptick in spam in my e-mail - apart from the FPN Classifieds. Why am I having this problem, and is there someone I can notify to stop it? Please help.

Okay, I never subscribed to classifieds, so I have no first hand experience.

I vaguely remember that a few months ago another member had similar problems. And I do not quite remember the solution, but I think that simply clicking unsubscribe at the top of the classifieds page does not work (it SHOULD work, but hey, if Microsoft can sell buggy software, a little bug in the boardsoftware is to be expected here and there...).

If you go to your settings (top right, click the button with your membership name on it, then in the menu choose settings). On the left click on manage notifications. Go to the section of classifieds and uncheck all. To be safe, log out and log in again. Then go back to the main page. I think that should do the trick.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
