Pen: Visconti Opera in Honey Almond
Date Reviewed: May 20, 2014

LOVE
* The way the squared body fits into my hand

* The balance (uncapped, I wouldn't cap this pen)

* The smooth, somewhat flexible nib & inkflow

* The easy-to-fill prodigiously large converter

COULD BE BETTER

* Ink gets into the body threads and cap, and is hard to clean (much time with water and a q-tip)

 

OVERALL

I fell in love with this pen the first time I saw it, and the affair hasn't yet ended. This is my "nice writing at home" pen that I use for poetry and catching up on my thoughts. The converter fills easily and holds a lot of ink (Private Reserve Spearmint, in this case). The nib is gorgeous to look at and feels smooth and elegant on paper. Customer service is excellent. The clip "unclipped" last year. Visconti shipped the pen back to Firenze and repaired it for a minimal cost. Oh yeah, and they put my initials on the cap. Cute touch.

Hi Sheri,

 

I paid $400USD for it around 3 years ago. It was far the most I've spent on a pen (until the black-stripe Pilot Myu I purchased for my wife's birthday), and has been worth every penny. The nib is so lovely; makes me happy feeling the ink slide on the paper!

Lovely pen, nice review...I have my eye on one of these myself, but I just have not pulled the trigger yet. I have a Opera Sunset which I love, but I have been lusting for the Honey Almond for a long time.

I too have been looking at a Visconti Opera and have been contemplating whether or not I want to pick it up...Thanks for the review! The finish on this one is awesome!

I bought this pen several years ago (well, maybe 7-8 years ago) and had the very same problem that has been noted here; ink gets into the cap and is difficult to near impossible to get out. The ink stains can be seen very easily right through the cap, making it less than desirable. I returned my first one where I bought it (a B&M store), for another, which had the same problem. Finally, disgusted with it, I brought it back for a refund. Pity though, as it was otherwise a very nice pen. This, and a few other incidents with Visconti pens has since put me off them. I will no longer buy a Visconti pen.

I just loaded Diamine Safari ink into the Visconti I reviewed above. The ink matches the pen perfectly, but better, it writes like a dream. This pen really loves this ink. I swoosh alot, and the nib doesn't skip at all.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
