Hey all,

So my friend gave me a pen that she found while cleaning her room (she knew I liked FPs). It seems like a Parker Sonnet but the weird thing about the pen was the Chinese character on the nib.

 

Anyone know what's the deal with this?

It appears to be a Chinese-made fake.

I might be wrong, but it looks faky to me. It doesn't look like the Sonnet CT I have. Fewer grooves on the cap ring, Chinese characters on the nib. If it's a counterfeit, it looks like one that would be nice to use, though.

The fake sonnet gold lustre that i bought from a con man had a standard looking nib, this one looks....strange :yikes:

I am not convinced that it is "fake". Could it be a Chinese-made Parker Sonnet ?

Hmm I've never seen that before, but yeah having looked up pictures of it it's exactly the same as mine.

That's a real Sonnet, I remember Parker made these for the asian market. It's called the Parker Sonnet Fu, which means prosperity. It's important to keep in mind that Parker has a huge brand recognition in China, much like Buick.

So I just cleaned it and inked it up. Man that nib is buttery smooth. It's amazing. Much more so than my Pelikan M215 or Pilot Metropolitan, and those are the smoothest writing pens I have.

With fake Chinese-made Sonnets being so common, I figured that's what the pen in the OP was. I had never heard of the Sonnet Fu before, but it makes sense. Parker has made maki-e LE Duofolds for the Chinese market and the SE Harry Potter Sonnet and Duofold for the Japanese market.

Sonnet Fu . . .looks different from the French made pens. Are they marketing these here now? Name seems appropriate.

The character on the nib is "fu" which means good luck, not prosperity. It's one of the standard auspicious characters. On Chinese New Years, you hang a paper "fu" upside down by your front door because the sentence "Ni de Fu dao le" when spoken means both "Your Fu is upside down" and "Your luck has arrived". It's a visual pun.

 

So, as you write, you look down on the nib and know "Ni de Fu dao le!"

Just noticed on Parker pens.net he only mentions a red Fu in a Duofold Centennial. Were the Sonnets follow ons and not a limited edition?

Really not a fake, see the finishes. I purchased one fake and it did not look like a good pen, period. If this is a genuine Parker for the Chinese market, then it is a nice pen to own.

I wish the Sonnet hatters would realize this as the Parker Sonnet is the best pen I have ever used and is one of my favorites. If you compare the other £50ish offerings from the other bigger manufactures they all feel cheaply made compared to the Sonnet.

What you wrote is what made me persist with the Sonnet until I finally figured how to keep them from clogging up. Now I just use one (or one at a time), and it's a great pen. That's what drove me to buy a couple of dozen Sonnets as I found bargains on them. A nice secondhand Sonnet for $20 to $50 is a nice pen. I upgraded several of the nibs. It has been an enjoyable experience. As long as people hate them and write bad things about them, there will be bargains. Steel nibs, gold nibs, all good. There are some black ones in the classifieds now.

Yeah they are really nice pens. I think my 3rd may be on the horizon as I can't really go for high end pens until my degree finishes and I have regular disposable income.

I like mine, though it's pretty easy to understand why since it is an 18K gold factory stub nib on a Cascade silver (steel with gold trim) pen from the 1990's.

 

Now I want one of the Fu's! Having studied Chinese it would be a perfect addition to my collection. Hmm. I'll have to look out for one once I get any money.

 

 

Yeah it looks really nice I prefer the nib design of this one to the normal ones.

I think that the only sin that the Parker Sonnets have is that they tend to dry the ink if not used regularly, other than that, I prefer the way the nib behaves in my hand rather than the nib of other pens. It is smooth and has a feeling that is peculiar to them that makes you write for long periods. I love the Sonnets.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.
