You can't be sure you lost by Only a buck. That was just the next allowable bid increment. The winner here could easily have been willing to go Much higher than a dollar more. There's no way to know.

Now, yeah, when you and others snipe at the last seconds and someone beats you there by say .02, that's the time for a stiff drink.

Good point! Still, someone got a great deal.

Thought maybe this thread might be helpful to centralize some of the eBay posts? Brian, look forward to seeing more of your Targas! You're on a roll.

Just off the top of my head in no particular order.

I think my 3 Cadets I paid $20-30 each for. My Imperial (777?) GP FP and BP set was $55. My Imperial Sovereign was $50. My Cadmium Imperial FP, BP set was $55. I probably have 7 other Imperials that I paid $30-35 each for. All but one of those have 14k nibs. I got a nice gray striped Jr? Balance for $40 here on FPN that has a Hugh Jass Stub in it. All of mine are in VG-Like new condition. I can think of 4 Imperials that I've had ground. EASILY doubled their value with that to me.

Sweet, congrats! The colour looks good -- doesn't have that yellow tinge that a lot of the jade Balances tend to get. Just needs a good re-sacing, and you'll be in business!

That's what I thought. The color was striking. And it's a big one. I'm pretty pleased.

Oh, squeeee!! It's a good day:

Sorry if anyone here was bidding too. I so dearly wanted a blue one in good condition!

Last miss that galled me (I've gotten better at dealing with this): a ShadowWave Vac for $25.00 BIN. Best part was I was watching eBay as it came online, and as fast as I could hit the keyboard, another person beat me by about a second; turns out it was a well-known entity, and he was actually able to gloat about it!

Most recent hit was a pristine PFM III fp/pencil set with box + a pristine pastel blue Sentinel Snorkel, all for $30.00. A few bucks to Danny Fudge for new seals and these pens are, literally, like brand new.

I would guess a clueless seller who titled the listing something like Two Schaffer fountain pens. (or maybe even Sheaffer spelled correctly).

Holy shite! How did the PFM set fly under the radar???

Well, first you have to know what you are looking for, or at least looking at! (By that, I mean that the ad, as you'll see, didn't mention PFM. You would have to have a pretty good idea that is what it was from a single, not-so-great photo) Secondly, this actually popped up as I did a search for newly listed BIN pens. It had only been listed a couple minutes, I believe. It is clear that the seller was, at the very least, not a pen person.

Here's the original listing. Looking for stuff like this can pay off.

ETA: Here's a shot after I got them, showing the pens a little better. Also included would have been the runner up for the recent hit, a very nice condition Waterman Lady Patrica for $25.00

Mardi13 you got a good deal. I've been chasing the restored pens from that seller but can't seem to find one where others aren't willing to pay much more than I. Looks like they'll get very good pens.

That's good to hear. I'm new to this and so never know if I have paid too much. I have been looking through the FPN to see what others have paid for restored pens. The Vacumatic seemed a good price.

This is probably one of my all time favorites. I collect these little plastic/bakelite globes made by sanford quite some time ago. They come in dark green, light green, dark red, light red, blue, dark and light brown, black and white. I had them all but the white one. Generally they run upwards of 50 dollars and I had never even SEEN a white one for sale..

Then I saw it and got it for just over $12! I was one happy camper!

That is in absolutely incredible shape to be closing in on 100 years old. Not to mention that material would have showed mishandling very easily.

That pen has either been Well Taken Care Of or stashed away somewhere where it'd be safe for a long time.

It looks a perfectly decent length posted. People say the same thing about the Estie SJ but it's also a much more "normal" size posted.

Well done Mardi.

It's a bit hard to post it, I'm not sure it is meant to be posted, it's a tight fit and I don't want to scratch up the pen. But it's hard for me to write with such a little thing! Practice, practice. I tend to put a death grip on thin pens so this will be good for me. Thanks again for posting the listing. It's a beautiful pen.

Wow- fantastic! I am always looking at this seller too! That's a great price! Last auction that I bid on with him closed well above $150.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
