Hey Guys,

I am thinking of buying new 149 and debating between 75th anniversary limited edition fountain pen and this years 90 year limited edition 149 fountain pen in F or M nib.

what you think which one I should go for I like 75th edition nib better than 90 year nib but overall both are v nice looking pens. another thing is 90 year I can go to Montblanc boutique and buy from here locally but for 75th edition I will need to go out and buy from someone on ebay as new or second hand. I am not sure what to do so thought of asking you experts here what you think.

I appreciate your help.

Thanks

I think you will wind up with the 90th anyway so you should shoot for that first and if that doesn't satisfy your taste buds get the 75th

I just got a 90th myself and it's an extremely nice pen

Do you like the thrill of the hunt? If so then go for the 75th. It will probably cost you me to find one new though.

I just noticed you are looking for a limited edition. The 75th is going to be a lot more expensive than the 90th. Of course, I think it is a lot more beautiful with the MOP star.

My comments above were assuming you meant the special edition, which is more in line with the 90th.

I mean 75th Special edition not the MOP one I can't afford that one for sure :D sorry My mistake. I mean 75th special edition with regular white star on the top of cap.

Can you see yourself owning them both in the future? If you can then I'd get the 90th now as you can buy it brand new. You can then get the 75th when you are ready from the secondhand market.

If you're only going to get one pen then I think you answered your question by stating that you prefer the nib on the 75th nib better. Loads of people buy good MBs from ebay, the key is to wait until a good one presents iself.

I'm speculating here, but I suspect MB will produce as many "90th" as they can sell this fiscal year. Perhaps that's incorrect, but when I talked to MB by telephone earlier this month, I was not disabused of that understanding. The 75th, on the other hand, has completed its production run. I have no idea how many were made. Perhaps consideration of relative scarcity might factor into your decision.

I would go for the 90th, it is new not used and you can choose your nib size, for the 75th you will have to take what you can get.

thank you guys. I think I am more leaned towards 75th special edition 149 compared to 90th which I saw in person at local Montblanc Boutique. I located one new 75th 149 but in M nib and now I am wondering if I buy that and ask MB if they can swith nib to F how much they will charge me or is there other way to make M a nice wet F nib?? what you guys think will that be possible??

I appreciate your help.

thanks

I think that if you buy the 75th SE from a boutique that you'll be able to take advantage of the MB's free nib swap to go from M to F, but this will probably depend on the availability of 75th Anniversary F nibs. That said, your boutique should be able to contact MB service/HQ and see if this would be possible.

I called local MB boutique and got 300-400 US dollars as rough estimate for nib exchange. hmm still thinking what to do. I dont even know how much import tax will be one a pen between 1000 to 2000 USD imported from outside USA. So have to look at that as I dont want to end up spending 2K on 149 :D

For me personally I like the 75th, but that is just me.  It is your money and you need to make the decision that best suits you.  We can all provide advice, but ultimately the decision is yours because you are the one that is going to eventually own it.  Buy the one you gravitate towards.  The one that when you look at your heart skips a beat.  Have fun and good luck!   :yikes:

Here are some photos of my 149 75th anniversary limited edition with MOP.

A good nibmeister can take an M to an F without a problem and make it amazing for you.

I doubt the one found was at a dealer, so the 300 to 400 exchange cost its right, but you would also have to wait maybe 2 months to get it back.

If you want a 100 year pen you can get one now. MB is good at celebrating various anniversaries. They have pens for the 100th anniversary of the firm, but I don't think a special 149.

If you want less blah, blah, blah and more pictures, follow me on Instagram!

I saw the 90th anniversary 149 yesterday. I also saw the regular small sized box that it comes with, rather than the large square 149 box plus ink bottle that I would have imagined it would come with.

No way would I buy one with that box.

The box is stopping you from buying one? The boxes are all pretty cheaply made anyhow. It is dumb how they don't include a free bottle of ink though. It should come with a bottle of the 90 years gray.

I will admit when I got my first 149 opening that box was a great moment.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
