Christ. What should I bring this year? I'm thinking I'm running out of stuff...

Bugger - Saturday November 1 - That is in one of the harder (expensive) weekends of the year to get flights and accommodation to Melbourne given that it Spring Racing Carnival time.

I suppose I could bring a few pens to sell to cover my costs.

I might just flight down early in the morning and fly back that night. :(

We will see.

I would love to come again if I'm free. I was there last year and had a wonderful time chatting with everyone, especially the lovely bunch at the Melbourne Calligraphy Society table. I don't know many people in real life who enjoy using fountain pens so it was really nice to meet those with a shared passion. I left with a pen purchase I'd wanted for a long time - a specific first generation Kaweco Art Sport I'd been unable to find for sale online. I hear of all these amazing pen shows in the USA and I'm happy that we have one of our own in Melbourne, probably the only one in Australia! Thank-you for making it happen!

Would love to, but can't make it down to Melbourne this weekend. Have a great time all!

All packed up and ready to roll. Keep an eye out for these things, if you're looking for me at the show tomorrow:

If you're looking for me - I'll be wearing a waistcoat and pocket-watch chain. I'll be the only person there wearing a waistcoat and pocket-watch chain, so I should be easy to spot.

Shangas, I didn't get to stop and chat, but you looked splendid in the waistcoat with the pocket watch, sleeve garter was a nice touch too!

Wish I could go down to Melbourne for the pen show.

Any pen shows being held in Brisbane?

I believe the Melbourne Pen Show is the only one in Australia. Maybe in the southern hemisphere?

I only have two pens - an Aurora Optima and others.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
