I'm Officially Declaring My Allegiance

Here is my claim - when it comes to modern fountain pens, Japan (especially Pilot) absolutely takes the cake in regards to consistently high quality and well performing and sophisticatedly designed pens. I now have accumulated a fairly large sample size, and my Pilots even blow my nicest vintage pens out of the water. I am just astounded at how amazing a writing experience I am guaranteed when I buy a high quality Japanese pen.

So kuddos to you, Japan.

I always have to adjust the nibs for more flow. I feel I get more consistent quality with Platinum. Not saying you are wrong. Just different opinions.

Yes, Pilot's quality controls are the best I've seen among all FP manufacturers.

It's quite amazing how Pilot is able to maintain such a wide range of pens and nibs, some of them designed and pioneered by them.

I think one of the most important reasons is that their internal market still uses FPs extensively, because the Japanese hold hand written notes in high regard

( Even your resume when applying for a job needs to be handwritten, because good handwriting is a good character trait).

Indeed, I have yet to use a Pilot pen that disappointed. Even those that didn't suit me weren't poor. However, there are a couple of other brands (Japanese or not) that haven't failed me yet either.

I love Pilot pens

I count ten in my armoury - not including three of their expressive parallel pens too.

Like alexander_k has just said, I too have yet to be disappointed by any pilot nib I've ever used, even the Varsity writes really well.

Their only "error", if you can call it that, is that their budget nibs write so, so well that I'm not tempted to go high end with them.

My 78Gs write almost as smoothly as my Vanishing Point and Custom 91 do.

Pilot has managed to become the majority shareholder in my pen case. It seemed to happen quietly, when I thought that Sailor would hold that position in perpetuity. I like my fine Custom 74 a lot, because of it s line and its flow. Still, Sailor catches my eye more often, though I can't afford them as regular purchases.

I heart Pilot fountain pens though I don't necessarily like their other pens that much. In fact I'm thinking of just keeping Pilot pens as i need to reduce my collection.

This is so interesting! I love the idea of a hand-written resume. I wonder what people here in the States would do if this were an option.

I am coming to the same conclusion as the OP. While I don't have an a large collection, I have tried a few different pens. Yet Pilot has managed to have the majority in my pen case and I continue to think about getting more.

Funny you say that. It's only because I like soft nibs that I get their high priced pens. Otherwise I am quite happy with the Pilot MR.

I have more Pilots than any other brand, followed by Noodler's, then Sailor. The Noodler's edge out the Sailors by one, because I wanted both the resin and the ebonite Konrad.

I am angry (huff, puff, huff puff) yes....... very angry with Pilot since they will not sell a clear demo 823 here in the US. I think the amber 823 is a very ugly color and do not find pilot designs particularly good looking. They write really well but if you look at them, you will be turned to stone (EEEEKkkkk..... OOOOoh N...............). So when I see a that very good looking pen unavailable in our country for what ever reason well then sir.... I want nothing to do with you...... nothing at all.

Oh, calm down. I think we had something of a discussion about this last week, didn't we? Are you really that adverse to ordering it from Japan?

Or waiting for someone to put up a used one for sale? BTW, the amber and the clear do nothing for me. I do have 3 smokes in fine, medium and broad.

I only have the broad in smoke, but holy smokes, it's a lovely pen.

I'm shifting towards Japan as well...as it stands now I have two Pilots and three Sailors, with two Platinums and a Pilot on the way...possibly two more soon, we'll see.

The only modern pens I consistently like are Japanese pens, specifically Pilot and Platinum pens. I haven't tried a Sailor yet but a 1911 Realo is on my list.

Pilot Falcon, Pilot Vanishing Point, Platinum 3776 Century.. probably my three favorite modern pens.

Probably different nib wetness preferences.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
