The Pen That Almost Got Away...

Recommended Posts

This is a pen I saw at a show and wanted to get it. The gentleman who owned it lessened the price for me if I wanted to buy it. I decided to think about it while I looked around. Something came up and I was not able to get back to the show to get this pen.

I tried contacting some of the vendors who sat next to the gentleman but they could not answer my question. I nearly gave up and decided to ask people who attended the show. Luckily, one person was able to give me a name and way to contact this gentleman. Alas, the gentleman told me that he ended up selling this pen. I was SO bummed out. I sent him a thank you email for taking the time to talk to me and look through his collection to see if he still had the pen.

This morning, he calls me to tell me he doublechecked his collection and found that he put it in a different box and would still sell it to me. He honored the price he gave me at the show. The gentleman was so nice. ^_^

I just want to say thanks to Stan for the info you provided me about this particular pen. If it wasn't for your site, I wouldn't have known what this was when I first saw it. So, I thought I'd post pics of it here so you can see it.

No one will ever be able to convince me that there Aren't those situations where a pen finds it's new owner despite what appear to be high odds to the contrary.

It's a beautiful thing when that One pen finds The One person who Really wants it.

LOL Thanks Bruce. Someone kept telling me that from now on I need to listen to the same advice Mike from American Pickers keeps saying. Basically, if you see something unusual and never saw anything like it before, get it. :D

The model is hard to find.

FWIW, it comes in black and red lacquer. The design is intended to be silver over the filled color.

In fifteen years, not counting books, I have now seen four of this model and all had black lacquer.

Outside of books, I have never seen one with red lacquer.

My pen has a SCRIPT nib. Another I saw had a MUSIC nib.

The lacquer might not be urushi as it comes off easily. This may be due to lack or proper surface preparation of the silver substrate.

IMHO, this design 'failure' has created an even better looking pen.

Always always always, if you've never seen it before and think you will never see one again, buy it.

That said, I cannot count the times when I have seen the same pen show up again a week later at a better price.

In case anyone's wondering, 蔓草 means something like 'creeping vine'.

On the Hunt For:

1) Atelier Simoni ID Demonstrator Natural Rhodium (As if it existed.)

2) Moresi 2nd Limited Edition Delta Demonstrator

3) y.y. Pen Club #4 and #10

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
