What's A Nice Bright Violet?

Up till now I've been focused on blues, but recently violets have been catching my eye. So what's a good violet ink? Do they have problems like red in terms of staining? Thanks!

For a nice bluish violet you can try Waterman's Tender Purple.

For a reddish violet you can try Montblanc Lavender.

For a violet that is neither bluish or reddish you can try Akkerman Simplisties Violet.

All are very nice and well behaved. No staining that I can see.

For a bright purple/violet Noodler's North African Violet is nice.

well after some trusty "wikipediaing", I think I may have gotten purple and violet mixed up. This colour on wikipedia really caught my eye :

The square in the first column, second row is the one :). Or tending towards the first column 3rd row as well.

I love Diamine Bilberry ... but it's darker ... you can dilute it.

I'd suggest you try Akkerman #13 at the next group buy:

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Thanks for all those samples! The Akkerman Simplistes Violet does look great!

Private Reserve DC Supershow Violet.

That looks extremely close to the colour I had in mind :D.

Iroshizuku Murasaki-shikibu is a beautiful purple. One of my favorites and well behaved to boot.

More as an alternative to your second choice, less bright though, my favorite, Herbin Poussière de Lune ...

Ive been doing alot of mixing lately and i found that 1:1 waterman tendre purple and waterman serenity makes a really nice blurple, but to me it more like just purple.

But first column second row seems clisest to PR tanzanite to me.

Just my $.02.

well, my local shop didn't have diamine, noodler's or private reserve :(. I went for a bottle of Pelikan Violet to tide me over till the next online order I do. Its a nice colour, albeit really dry - it even slowed down my Binder M200 that blazes through ink :o. I think I might pull the trigger on PR DC Supershow Violet soon-ish :D.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
