Ebony Wood Stealth With Snake Roll Stop

Joseph B

Recommended Posts

I wanted a large classic size pen in black. So I chose ebony wood. The feel and satin appearance of the unfinished wood lead me to leave it unfinished. For stealth effect, I used a black F Monteverde Nib. Thread coupler is 14 mm triple start of Delrin although I may ultimately replace it and the plastic section with those of ebonite. The roll stop snake is of sterling silver. Comments and questions are welcome.

My wife and I got a good chuckle from your comment, but come to think of it I intend to follow your advice.

Is that also functional as a clip, or just for very attractive decorative purposes as a roll-stop?

This is sterling and is really too soft for any spring action. So it is just a decorative roll stop, maybe if one could locate a stainless steel or other alloy version, that might work. I bought this one on EBay advertised as a thumb ring, and a ring size 7-8 fit very nicely.

Was this handmade yourself? Impressive! How long would it last unfinished?

Thank you. I turned all the wood parts and couplings, it is bonded to brass tubing. Ebony is an oily wood and in fact I read that many finishes (including Urushi) will not perform well on it. I intend to used furniture wax on it occasionally. I expect it to just wear nicely and if dinged it can always be re-polished with 2000 grit sand paper. It is hard and strong and it's interesting that ebony's density in many cases is higher than water so it will not float. It feels weighty and robust. Thank you for your interest.

That is really wise idea. I sometimes tought the same if silver or gold rings could be used as cap bands also.

Very nice pen! Regarding the ebony wood, I have a fountain pen entirely made out of this material with no finish at all. It's four years old now And I have never had any issue with it even dropping it into ink, but not be because it is an oily wood but is ultra dense. i have finished ebony with different finishes, even Urushi lacquer, and all of them are suitable. But the warm and natural feeling is lost so for me, ebony wood is the only wood that can be used without any finish in a fountian pen. Let's make more of this!

Thanks for the information, there is no substitute for experience. I absolutely agree with you about the feel of the material. And I intend to make more using unfinished ebony. Thanks again. Joe

Quite attractive and elegant; ebony is often left unfinished because it's such a nice fine wood. I am not, as a general rule, fond of wooden pens, but I will always make an exception for ebony.

I would say that, fine-looking as it is, its looks might be even further improved if you tapered the transition from the cap to pen body; as is, the sharp step is a little jarring in my opinion. I do recognize that it is wood, however. Not sure how strong ebony is in thin sections. Might be a bit difficult to turn down that far with suffering nasty consequences.

Evan, Thanks, I agree about the step. I tapered it some and ask myself how much thinner I could make the edge without those consequences you mention. I'll probably have to find out one of these days. The other possibility is putting a dreaded step on the barrel for it to abut to, but I wanted a totally clean transition there if possible. Design evolution with different materials makes this hobby so engaging. Good input, thanks. Joe

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
