Hi knowledgeables,

I was given a mont blanc from my godfather which he never used for my birthday (I have been fond of Conway Stewart), and I am completely new to the brand beyond the ink. Would anyone be able to tell me what I have got and some context?

The cap tells me it's a Meisterstuck, and the point has inscribed:

4810

M

14K

585

Thanks for looking.

What you have there is a Montblanc 146 (aka LeGrand) piston fill fountain pen with platinum plated trim. Looks like a fine nib too. I'd say it is a modern version. They are highly regarded pens, I even get the feeling that they are preferred over the larger 149. I have two 146 and think they are both great pens.

Enjoy

That is a very nice gift from your godfather.

Hope you will enjoy it!

This model is known as 146P(latinum) (already stated above) or Legrand.

If it is a brand new one you can also swap the nib within 6 weeks free of charge.

@mtraynor

congrats on a beautiful gift, a keeper of a pen, enjoy it!

all MB nibs are marked thus

  1. 4810 is the height of Mont Blanc in meters, the mountain after which the company is named
  2. 14K means 14 Carat gold, 24 Carat being pure gold, 14/24 i= 585/1000, these are the martks of jewelers (MB in this case) certifying the gold content of the nib, and
  3. M in a double circle one round and one wavy is the mark of MB, not medium nib. nib sizes are not marked on the nibs by MB. With a platinum accents the nib should be mostly white (platinum coated), with a border of gold at the edges - two tone nib. Nibs are all hand ground, vary in sizes and for the same point size may lay down different width of line eg a F may vary from EF to bordering on M in line width. Yours looks like a standard F as has been mentioned above

Thanks very much for the appraisal, everyone. I think it's the most unexpected and splendid item I've ever had: platinum! I have got it going with Royal Blue, and already treasure it. It'll hopefully get me through exam term with more enthusiasm for revision...

I think you might be correct about the size being just right too. I look forward to getting to know it.

Good luck with the exams.

Please stay far away from this forum during your exams.

Otherwise it will swallow your life into it. Constantly hitting "F5" to see if there are new posts/topics.

And dreaming which one will be your next pen...

I have been there done that...

Nowadays I can control myself better.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
