Ultrasonics with James Products Sea Clean added. It had some old stock Waterman black inside which I wanted to ensure was ALL out. I left all these parts soaking for 4 days, pulsing once or twice for 8 minutes each day.

Polished off with a rouge gold/silver jewellery cloth.

Very nice cleaning results. Must de-mothball my ultrasonic soon.

What is that James Pr Sea Clean? a salt solution? Never saw the brand here...

Hi D.ick,

I use the old Mk1 but here is there latest product.

http://www.jamesproducts.co.uk/sea-clean-solution.html

It is made from fruit extracts, seaweed and coconut oil. Strange though cos it says you can't drink it.

It removes tarnish, carbon, rust and dirt.

I've been tidying up this beat up Amazon. The Nib/sections good but body was a bit scratched. It's not too bad though as they go.

It says not to be used on plated metals... That would make it unsuitable for many fountainpens?

Thanks, definitely looks like it worked! Will have to search around for some of this to clean my own pens out with. Do you only place the nib in the machine or does it damage the resin parts of the pen if you put them in?

I have only used it on gold plated parts and it does not affect them. Will watch out in future though. Can't be as bad as ink looking at the above ring.

Also what is pulsing?

Would an ultrasonic cleaner take the lacquer off of pens?

Force:

In your photo showing the 100% breakdown of the Man 100 section/feed/nib, what do you call the black plastic combination inner section/feed? Would this one work in a Gentleman?

If you are referring to the plastic part with gold ring, FPN member dboulonnais, whom I purchased the new part from, calls it a little chamber.

I do not know the answer to your Q, but perhaps a message to him would get the answer.

A little chamber inside the section that connects the ink source to the feed and nib. A lot of words, but it works. I call it the inner section. Does the feed separate from it, or is the feed and the little section a single piece of plastic?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
