Is There A Dark Red? Blue Red? Something That Doesn't Look Like Red Grading Ink? Also A Dark Purple To Write With As Well?

Well I've been seeing if I could branch out of my collection of blue, an iron gall red ink would probably be freaking amazing if possible but yea I want to try and find a good red to write with that seems dark maybe even a blood red not sure how to explain the tone I'm looking for :/ Also a purple would be awesome too and iron gall would be best, but something that isn't too much of a bright purple either.

Diamine Syrah Comes to mind, depending on the paper it is almost a dark almost blood red, in fine nib it a bit darker looking almost like black with a hint of red.

Oxblood also comes to mind but I haven't personally used it.

Or for very very almost black, there's Cult Pens Deep Dark Red, DD Purple, DD Blue, DD Brown and DD Green.

Deep Dark Red looks sorta like Syrah.

(Though if the OP is in the US, it's far cheaper to get a pick of diamine ink from npiab.se for a flat 2 euro (~$3) shipping, as opposed to 10 british pounds (~$16) shipping)

I'm seeing a lot of variation in colour, but DD Red looks more brown-red to me, whereas Syrah has a more pink-purple red to it...

Oddly I'm not seeing pink with my Syrah, least not to the degree shown above, and not in the samples I've seen online at the retailers. So maybe it's changed in the last 4 years? (that post is from 2010).

Scan of it just now (have to go really fast across the paper to get it lightened and even then seems more of a brown/red-wine etc).

My tuppence, Organics Studio Red Rubber Ball - a lovely unusual dark red. Well behaved too.

These are just for reference. Best of luck :)

That a water-resistance test in the bottom right corner?

Not really. It's a dab of ink from the nib onto wetted paper. It was meant to show chromatics but it didn't really work out as well as I'd hoped.

Water resistance can kind of be seen in the "vase" and "rectangle" - I gently washed over dry ink to see how the ink behaves.

For the IG purple Rohrer & Klingner Scabiosa is the only one. But the Cultpens DD Purple also seems to be a nice color - non-ig of course.
As for the red, I really like the Oxblood, but seeing the Syrah on Tas' ink card - what is cool -, it can be a good bet too.

Scabiosa is a little light for me (though does seem to get a little darker after about a day, almost like a deeper lilac)

Diamine Imperial Blue seems purplish, but it's not quite so "dark". That Cultpen DD Purple looks nice though, dark yet purple.

Yes it can be kind of light, but it has the capabilities:

I don't mind it's lighter tone though, because it is not that vivid to be distracting.

Just for fun, a little Oxblood:

What nib are you using in the Scabiosa example?

And that Oxblood looks nice, keep meaning to get some but any time I'm down for getting some it's sold out or backordered :P

It was a Montblanc 644G EF

The Oxblood definitely worth a try IMO.

Scabiosa has a real charm about it. I can't quite put my finger on it but I love using the ink both for writing but especially for sketching.

I do like the color with a stub nib (I no longer have a sample of it as I gave it to a class mate when I sold her a X750 with a Nemosine 0.7 Stub nib), but the times I've tried it, it seems to run a bit on the 'dry' side for me compared to other inks. Though I think this seems to be common of iron gall inks.

Very true! It does like a wet pen, hence living in one of my Ahabs.

I've just loaded (and now unloaded it  ) into my Sheaffer Taranis - which is not in any way a wet pen. Yuk. Pale and draggy.

Caran d'Ache Magnet Blue is in there now - Yum.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
