Caran D'ache - $40/bottle?

Now for someone who spends hundreds of dollars on a fountain pen, I can't say I'm in the category of a cheap fountain pen user.

But when I got an email from Farhney's advertising the new Caran D'ache inks, at $40 for a 50ml bottle, I must admit I was a surprised, to say the least.

I guess that ' in D'Ache adds to the cost.

I think it's ridiculous !

Some of my favourite well behaved inks are a fraction of the price...

I just don't see anything justifying the cost...

Its nice and the bottle is attractive but the ink is not worth the money.

More than 100% increase on MB inks.

Perhaps the D'Ache is not pronounced 'D'ash' but 'De Ache'

ps, that sounds a lot better than it reads.

Hrm it's still listed as 32$ over at GouletPens.

And I've never bought a bottle of it, but I do have Hypnotic Turquoise and Electric Orange only because a brother of mine bought two bottles of them, for the first time purchase of fountain pens (and he doesn't even have a pen to use them when he purchased them... painting with them...). Managed to get some samples off him before he contaminates the bottles (knowing him, it'll happen).

Agreed, Noodler's and Waterman for example are easily purchased at 12$ or less, and for Noodler's Black Eel it's 90ml filled to the brim for that $12.

The bottle's sure swank. I was hoping Goulet would have some empties after they came in - they had a couple, and I missed them, apparently - but can't care enough to buy the ink.

I bought a bottle of Iroshizuku, and may get another or two... if I can get them 40% off. :)

I have tried most of these inks via Goulet samples, and must admit that I loved Vibrant Green so much in a wet writer (that red sheen!!) that I ended up buying a bottle. But though there are a few others I quite like, I am still daunted by the price tag.

IMO such a price is indeed ridiculous. But then I'm ridiculous myself. Some of the inks' new colours are innovative (although their actual names may be weird). The boxes are a new invention, quite practical although not all that beautiful, but the bottles, especially their caps are better than those of any other inks I've bought. Still, they might just as well have remained with the older bottles and boxes and prices.

Not any more they don't. They go quick. I'll nab one one of these days.

The Waterman bottles may work nearly as well, and are less expensive. Almost less expensive when filled with ink, and the ink is nice enough.

Ridiculous...yup, but I wanted one so I got one...they would sell a bunch more if the price was a bit more reasonable!

FYI, Akkerman ink in 150ml bottles is no longer available.

I knew CdA was expensive, but it seems to have become even more so. In the Netherlands, Iroshizuku seems to top everything else, at €39 for a 50ml bottle. In Germany, it can be found for €15.... (Amazon.de).

ill pay a lot for ink; but CdA is too expensive for me. The max ill spend on ink is iroshizuku prices ($per bottle) about 60 cents/ml. anything over that feels like highway robbery

I got some samples of the latest CdA inks and I have to say, for that price I'm not impressed, I don't like it as much as some of my Noodler's inks for feel although the colors are quite nice (but not that nice, I'm sure I could find something close).

I don't love any ink enough to pay that amount. I wouldn't spend $40/bottle on Racing Green or Penman Saphire., either. There are too many amazing inks made by innovative companies like Noodlers and Organic Studios, and individuals like Pharmacist, for me to spend that much on CdA. I did like their old Saffron, though.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
