Vintage Gold-Plated Sheaffer (From Atlanta Pen Show)

So I went to the Atlanta Pen Show on Saturday, and had an absolutely fabulous time. The vendors there were all wonderful, and the company was nothing short of awesome. I'm given to understand that this pen show is not as large as some, and a little slow at times, but I'm so glad that they have it every year. I went in looking for specific things, and I found every item on my list.

The Iroshizuku ink is Syo Ro, which I have wanted for some time. The Noodler's ink is Ottoman Rose, which looks spectacular in my Sailor pen, and I needed to upgrade from sample vial to full bottle. I also came away with samples for a couple different colors of Akkerman ink, and it was fun to see their new "small" bottles (they weren't really all that small). Also pictured is a Clairefontaine lined notebook, with inner pocket dividers, a Rhodia Webbie, and the Sheaffer Flex Pen.

I went in wanting a flex pen, with no specific brand in mind. I was able to sit down at Susan Wirth's table and try a good number of pens, from moderate flex to wet noodle. When I tried this one, I knew that it was the right one. It's not a wet noodle, as it requires light to moderate pressure to flex, but it is a pen that gives lovely swells and also has a nib that can be used easily without flexing it, doesn't gush ink, and quickly bounces back after flexing. It's perfect, for me.

You can see by the picture that it had a previous owner, "R. Landon." You can see a bit of the checkered design of the gold plating. Some of the gold plating has rubbed off around the bottom of the pen and the edge of the cap, but it wasn't much of a detraction for me. I don't know what kind of Sheaffer it is, as I know very little about the brand, but it's an older-style lever fill. The innards seem to be in excellent condition (or were restored to excellent condition). The clip says "Sheaffer's" and it also says "Sheaffer's" around the edge of the cap, both in all caps.

The nib shot is a touch blurry, sorry, but this doesn't appear to be the original nib. It's labeled C.C. Vogt, 2, Allentown, PA, 14K. As I mentioned above, it has moderate flex. It has only railroaded twice, and that's with the J. Herbin Pearl Noir ink I put in it, mostly because my other black inks are all at the office. I'll probably replace it with Waterman.

This is an example of the writing, when the pen was inked with the Syo Ro. Normally I like colors, especially those that provide shading, and I love Syo Ro especially, but in this pen, I find that I actually prefer a basic black for writing. This is weird, to me, because generally I find black a touch boring (it's all I'm allowed to use at the office, but something about black in this pen just seems stunning to me.

Here is a picture with black ink instead (J. Herbin Pearl Noir).

I'm not usually a Sheaffer fan, so when I picked it up and wrote with it and loved with, and then looked at the brand, both my friend and I went, "This is a Sheaffer?" It's a great little pen, and I was pleased to find what I was looking for at the show. I saw a lot of other happy customers too!

Susan Wirth's table is dangerous! That's a great pen and I'll bet that nib is very old. It's hard to imagine fountain pens were made in Allentown but Wirts were made their too. I've got PR velvet Black in my Waterman 52.

It really was dangerous. There were pens of all flex levels, and I almost went for a wet noodle before I tried this one. I highly recommend them!

There are now moths coming out my wallet. I'll be paying for the flex pen with several months of fun money. Overall, though, it was definitely worth it.

I'm hoping maybe someone will know what pen it is that I got. :-)

Thanks for review and writing samples!

Don't you love it when you find that pen that you would have never thought would work until you tried it?

I was Origami Ink in Asheville signing the credit card receipt and had to say stop - whoa - what is this pen? And I bought it. Would have never ever tried it based on just looking at it in the case!

What a great time I had in Atlanta this past weekend! Getting to know a few of those familiar faces a bit better was probably one of the nicest parts of the show.

Getting to meet Esterbex was a real high point! Spending some time with Jim Rouse( Franklin Christoph) , Andy Lambreau (Classic), Mario Campa (Toys In The Attic), Pendleton ( of course!), Mike Masuyama (Mike It Work), Sherry Potter (Total Fine Writing), the Andersons......great times. Maybe Raleigh... Dallas...DC...Chicago....next, who knows?

To all I met, "Thank you" for making my weekend complete..for those I didnt meet ...maybe I'll see ya next year!

We had a fabulous time too. It was nice to get away for a night, and to be able to hang out and talk with people for more than just a few minutes. :-) I'm glad you made it home safely!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
