Pelikan M100 White

Hello all! Yes it's me again! Back with another one of my ________ reviews! (fill in the blank yourself)

Today, what we have on hand is the Pelikan M100. This is one vintage pen, dating back to the era of West Germany. (OK I guess I'm using vintage pretty loosely here, it's only been about 20+ years?)

Some pictures before the actual review:

And now, to the review proper.

Appearance and Design: 8/10.

A classic pen, a classic design. Pelikans started making pens way back in the days, and the design of the pen has remained largely the same over the years, from the Pelikan 100 to the pens of today. Indeed, why change a classic look? Beautiful in its own way :)

And white on black looks good! Why? Because white and black can match with any colour! :D

Construction and Design: 7.5/10.

One solid pen despite its light weight! No visible defects, though the clip has been slightly sprung out of place.

Weight and Dimensions: 9/10.

This is one light pen! It's even lighter than the M200, which puts it at just under 14g. It feels good in the hand, and is just over 12cm long (122mm/12.2cm). Unlike the Pilot Custom 74, it is not top heavy for me. Please don't drop this pen! You'll not only dent it, but also dirty it! >< It is comfortable in the hand without posting, but I would personally prefer to post it (my hands measure 6 inches/15cm from the wrist to the tip of my middle finger).

Here's a comparison with the M200. Not too much difference there then!

Nib and Performance: 9/10.

This is one smooth nib! Writes OOTB for me (though I'm not sure if it has been adjusted by the previous owner). There is also some line variation to this nib, as can be seen from the writing sample below.

Filling system and Maintenance: 10/10!!

It's a piston filler! My favourite! <3 Plus, Pelikan is the company that re-patented the piston filling system (http://www.pelikan.com/pulse/Pulsar/en_US.CMS.displayCMS.93699./the-piston-filling-mechanism), and theirs is one solid system! And maintenance on this pen is easy as one can unscrew the nib unit out!

Cost and Value: 10/10!!

I got this pen in a swop with another FPN member (thanks Thomas!), my 580 for the beauty! Definitely a good deal for me, since I prefer light pens and this one is light indeed! Awesome deal!

Conclusion: 8.91/10.

One great pen! Light. white, piston filler, a Pelikan... ahhhhhh they are all my loves. Pelikan was my first fountain pen (the 200 demo) so I have an undescribable feeling about Pelikan. Would I go for this again? Yes yes and yes. A no-brainer question that is! What a fabulous pen!

Nice review, thanks. I never can see a difference between these and the M200.

The M100's are smaller but not by a terrible margin. It's the difference of 3mm in length and 1mm in diameter. Noticeable but still very usable.

The 100 was made 1929-1938 and the 100N was 1938-1951. This is the M100 introduced in the 1980's and is part of Pelikan's tradition line. These are currently out of production.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
